I’ve been out scouting and tracking animals lately but not being an expert I have to ask some of the fellas what the heck is it.
So here are a couple I’ve come across this last week or so.
1- Coyote
2- Black Bear
3- I believe Grizzly with a cub

What do the experts say ?
What have you tracked lately?

Dogs wander back and forth whereas a coyote moves more so with purpose.
Wolf has huge feet.

Grizzly Bear has longer claws than a Black.

We make our living in the dirt. My eyes are on the ground much of the time. I have always been interested in the art of tracking. 20200611_075546.jpg this is admittedly a terrible picture, but it sure looks like big cat tracks. I've heard stories all mmy life about cougars in our area. Much like this picture, I haven't seen much good evidence except stories from reliable sources.

20190914_185832.jpg I'm pretty certain these are bobcat tracks in the nearby river bed.

Those both look about right.

I met a retired Montana trooper and his wife both are eighty years old both are avid hunters however SHE is a lifelong trapper as well, shot her first Moose at 60 years old. Any chance I get to pick her brain I will, here’s a couple of tips;
Deer obviously walk on old pathways /roads etc. wandering back and forth while Moose may also take a path or old road more with purpose while an Elk has very similar hoofs will be more likely to cross the road and continue through the trees or timber. Moose also like the high timber I’ve seen one up high personally.

Tracking Deer Sucks!
They are all over the place with the overlapping movement I find it difficult to tell a decent buck from a big doe without a visual confirmation.
I had one of them smart Deer double back over my tracks last snow. 94672075-461B-481D-B80F-95ED9AB94C75.jpeg

I also came across this little fella , I’ll have to check with my pro to figure out what it is, ...anyone that knows holler out.

Latest thing I have tracked wasn't four legged.

The only snakes large enough on this ranch to make that track would be either an Indigo or a rattler (That boot track is a EEE). Followed it a couple hundred yards.

But lost my curiosity when it entered a large old brush pile!

Hope it’s an Indigo. They are really cool snakes and much more useful than rattlers. Too bad they are so uncommon. I see a few eastern Indigos a year here when I have to trek into the spray fields of the place I work at. See a bunch of rattlers and copperheads too.
