A lot has been said recently about the fact that some pistol braces are not approved by the ATF. My understanding is that a non-approved brace is not necessarily illegal, just that no determination has been made by ATF as to whether they consider it a brace or a stock.

So is there a list of ATF approved pistol braces?

Just like everything else legal wise it is vague so can’t understand and debatable so some lawyer or politician can make a lot of money. Shoot away and don’t worry about. There are millions of people with AR pistols just like yours, they aren’t gonna come 1 by 1 and round us up unless they want Anarchy and at that point I’m using what I have regardless.

With all the talk about braces and legality/illegality lately on an AR pistol, what's really wrong with the straight up pistol tube? Not that I have ever shouldered the pistol tube, but I hear tell the mechanics are the same or similar as a brace, and the minimal recoil from the 5.56/.223 doesn't make the tube alone uncomfortable...or so I've been told.....

I think I could see a brace of some sort having more application on something like an AK or the back end of a Ruger Charger 9mm, where there is no spring tube.

No. There is no list published by ATF.

When people submit a firearm or firearm accessory to ATF for "determination", ATF Firearms Technology Industry Services Branch (formerly called Technical Branch) would look at what was submitted and send a determination letter back. They would give their opinion as to whether the submission met the definition of a particular firearm in federal law. The determination letter applies only to that particular item "as submitted". If the person subsequently changes part of that design then the determination may also change. Thats what happened with the Akins Accelerator .....after getting "approval" ( not really approval, just a determination letter) he changed the design. ATF later determined his changes brought that design under the NFA. He had to buy back his designs from customers.

In 2018, ATF announced they would no longer give determinations on "accessories" unless submitted with a firearm.

I've seen pics of AR pistols with a tennis ball stuck on the end of the tube. Not much good for a butt-stroke, but it's probably more comfortable than the tube alone.

Hahahaha.....the fact we are even asking this proves the point it was only a matter of time..no list I know of exists.
