Hilarious ammo price of the week

The next most important thing after primers will be a set of 9MM dies. They have been unobtainum since April. Helped a friend set up for reloading over the summer and the one thing he still needs is those dies. He can load 357 so not out completly but one pistol on the shelf unless he borrows my dies.

Crazy times. I actually think most ammo prices will start coming down with in a few months. By summer much of the country will be vaccinated against the 'rona and manufacturers pumping out ammo. Sure, many states will be on lock-down for ammo, but most wont and many folks who dropped all their savings to hoard and gouge-sell ammo will be out of luck and try to unload. Don't get me wrong, prices will probably never go back to Dec 2019 prices, but I'm guessing should stabilize 50% over what they used to be.

I was at Cabela's yesterday and saw 6 boxes of 223 on the shelf. Hornady V max 50 grain. $23 each.

I've been seeing a fair amount of .223, but not selling for those prices. More like $9.99 for a box of Federal 20 round boxes at the local Bi-Mart.
The Big 5 had a lot of .223 is stock this last Wednesday, even the 150 round packs. No, I don't recall the prices, but not as bad as most have reported on here.

Not too "hilarious" but painful -- I "bit the bullet" so to speak, and found a guy on GB selling SPP. The buy-it-now price was just shy of a grand for 5000. He had over 450 positive feedbacks, so I "bit" and sent off a USPS money order since there was no credit card option. Last week I received a box with three pieces of scrap wood and note from this guy telling me what an fool I was! Raised all kinds of noise on GB and all the good it did was get me booted.
Contact your local Postmaster. They take mail fraud very serious.

Just happened to click on "Ammo" on Midway's site in the middle of the night (about 0200 PST) and it showed they had Prvi Partisan .30-30 Win 170 gr SPs -- $13.99 a box. Now, that's pre-pandemic, pre-panic prices (yeah, it's not premium ammo but seems to have almost all favorable reviews over the years on MIdway), so -- I ordered 3 boxes (the limit). Just because... one can never have too much .30-30 (and in case our lever-guns have to replace our ARs after Sleepy Joe gets his ban through Congress). 'Course, by 0600, it was all sold out.

So I found (1) the availability and (2) the price hilarious. And yet, I bought some.

With Resident-Elect Biden promising a ban on imported ammo on Day 1 using his powers under the 1968 GCA, domestic manufacturing will have a difficult time making up for the shortfall. I'd expect prices to do the opposite of what you propose. I don't expect his ban to stand up to legal review, since the ridiculous "sporting" determination is easily applied to even the most scary of rounds, but that process could take months. Oh, and he promises to ban mail-order ammo too.

I just looked. Amazon also has Lee 9mm four die sets available. For $125. Talk about 'hilarious price' - that's nuts.
When I was looking for the Lee deluxe 4 carbide die set for 38/357 a couple weeks ago one auction site had a bid of $193 at the time. I found the same set new for $43. I think it was Powder Valley I bought from.

How about sharing the "seller's" name to spare us the same fate?

You're tuned in. Although, given that every state (that I'm aware of) bans the use of fmj (i.e. cheap) ammo for hunting, one could argue that fmj has no "sporting" purpose and therefore can be banned from importation. So all that could be imported would be variations of soft point lead etc "hunting" ammo. (One could also argue that fmj is used in marksmanship competition, which is a "sporting purpose." I guess a judge or judges will have to decide.)

Ya'll might hang me for this, but on a none 2A level, this isn't the worst thing in the world, If the ammo makers step up to the plate, expand production capabilities (construction jobs for Americans) and then hire more staff (manufacturing jobs for Americans.) But it will certainly, at a minimum, increase the cost of ammo.

Banning mail order/internet sales of ammo (of anything) could be more difficult that we surmise. Biden can't do it alone, but Congress can using the interstate commerce clause in the Constitution. That requires enough votes. All that is required to scuttle that boat is 1-2 Democrat defectors in the Senate. Difficult but a not a complete impossibility.

The bolded part will NOT happen; that would take a few years to accomplish and with uncertainty with the new administration, NO company will expend the money

Yeah we've already covered that ground. I'm the only one here who thinks the ammo makers should be, or already should have, expanded capacity. I took this opportunity to reiterate that position. If Biden and his Congressional allies do ban the importation of ammo, either in whole or in part, consumers (that's you and I) are going to be looking to American/domestic producers to make up that gap. They can either step up to the plate, or they can plod along as they have always done, in which case, you and I are going to bear the burden. But if the net administration does accomplish that goal, it will be a long standing situation and people will no longer be able to say "oh this is only temporary."

Remember however, he also plans on gutting the military so there should be capacity from reduced military contracts possibly coming into play. That said he also plans to atop internet sales of ammo, guns, reloading stuff, etc., so until all of the dust settles, no company is going to invest scarce resources and capital for expansion. Right now, they are running balls to the wall and will continue to do so until they see how things sort out.

Ordered a set of 9mm dies 6 months ago from them and they shipped 7.62×39. returned and gave up.

Hmmm..with the largest russian cyber attack in history, 2500 people a day dying of COVID, a stalled and delayed vaccine distribution 'setup', an economy in the toilet.

President Biden 'may' not get to that on his first day.
