What is going on here?? First time to the range with 65 rounds fired and it functioned perfectly with good accuracy. Rifle is PSA premium upper with chrome lined barrel (bought assembled), Bushmaster lower, and PSA MPI nitride bolt carrier group.

The residue came off easily and everything looks ok when cleaned, but what the heck caused this?

I can't say I've ever seen anything like that. Looks like copper. How it got there is a mystery. I noticed everything looks very dry. What are you using for lubricant?

ETA - If this was the first trip to the range, it might be something left over from manufacturing. Clean it up really well and shoot it some more. See if it comes back.

Very odd. Did you clean and lube it before shooting? Might just be some sort of manufacturer rust inhibitor burning off. Would also explain why it came off easily when cleaned. On your next range outing, try a different ammo and see if you get the same results. That can help narrow down the cause quite a bit.

It's copper residue from shooting. Having it show up in 65 rounds is a bit weird.

My suppressor flash hider mount was damn near totally green after I spent a couple years shooting my suppressed AR without cleaning (just adding oil). Probably had something like 2-3 thousand rounds through it by the time it was done. Came off with some cleaner and a brush.

Thanks guys. Ammo was carefully made reloads that I’ve used in other rifles with good accuracy and no issues. I did clean the upper before shooting but some factory junk remained around the chamber. I’ll see if the issue returns after a really good cleaning with brake cleaner spray followed by a good hand cleaning.

Corrosive primers should be a thing of the long distant past, yes?
Willing to be wrong about this, but they cause such maintenance problems that militaries especially have avoided them.
I run my ARs wetter than that, but that's another issue.

What brand ammo? Looks like what I’d get after shooting Russian steel cased.....
That’s exactly what I would say. The only times I’ve ever had this happen was with Tulammo and I only got it because I let it sit for a while before cleaning
