I find that the more hawks I try, the more I like them. I’m hoping the THR Family can point me in the direction of the next one.

Currently, I possess two: a Thrower Design mouse hawk that I bought after watching the Wranglerstar “testing the cheapest tomahawk on Amazon” video, and a SOG Voodoo Hawk Mini. I like them both, but neither of them are quite right for me. I’m looking for something that I can only describe as a hybrid between the two.

I’m finding that I prefer the synthetic, bolted on style handle of the voodoo hawk mini, over the wooden, tapered, mouse hawk type handle that just runs through an eye in the head of the tool. After putting some unintended holes in one of my leather jackets and a pair of good pants, I really don’t want a spike or any sharp protuberance on the back of the head. I know there a ton of hatchets out there that fit the description, but they are too heavy since they rely on mass instead of speed.

Anyone have any recommendations? If I can’t find anything that fits the criteria, I’ll probably just pic up a cold steel trench hawk, or a sog voodoo hawk, and cut off the spike on the back, but I’d rather have something that comes from the factory the way I like it. I’m also thinking of just filling the space in the eye/handle area of the mouse hawk with lots of JB weld, and wrapping the entire handle with paracord, but in all honesty, I’m probably going to do that anyways, even if finding a factory hawk that fits the Bill.

due to the weight and wooden sliding handle, the CRKT Chogan hawks aren’t really what I’m looking for right now (don’t get me wrong, I love them, they just aren’t going to be the next tomahawk I acquire.)

does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you, and happy hunting,
Chris “the kayak-man”

If you like the SOG, check out their SOG camp axe. Its basically a hawk with a squared off head instead instead of a spike.

If you are looking for a hawk to be kept in the hand, during use, rather than thrown, the Jenny Wren by RMJ Tactical comes to mind. There is a version without the spike, but the spike, on the original, is not long. The Kydex sheath covers the edges and points, anyway.

CRKT actually makes a version of the Jenny Wren that sells for about $300 or so less, little over $100 last I saw one.
