Best Ear Protection

I have a couple of pairs of Peltor Tactical 6S ears, multiple different sets of passive ears, a couple of different type of foam inserts, etc. I think that most of us who have been doing this awhile end up with quite a collection of such items.

A few years ago I bought the item shown below (for $9.99 at the time ... good thing that I bought a 2nd in Fall'19 at the same price :)) just to have something to hand out to friends/family and wrap around my neck on farm walkabouts ... in case I came across something that needed to be shot. ;)

These inexpensive little silicone inserts are WONderful. They list no noise reduction rating but IME it is substantial. Most recently I used my current pair for testfiring a .30cal Savage 99 that my cousin suggested that I try. Even though I was surrounded by reflectors (wooded area) noise-pulse was not an issue.

FWIW ... :)

Plugs and muffs have worked for me, and I have been an indoor shooter for 48 years. I also wear muffs when I use power tools, even a vacuum cleaner. Looking into getting molded ear plugs.

Dude

That is what I bought. I also had my Doctor make me a set of earplugs. I used both the other day and will continue to do so at the range.

Thanks for info....

Question about custom earplugs. I currently use muffs.
I have serious TMJ issues and any type of foam earplugs are horribly uncomfortable for me. The pressure they put on my ear canal causes my TMJ to go off the charts. Do people who use custom made ear protection get any pressure on the ear from them? I hope I'm explaining this right.

An audiologist might be able to mold some that were quiet and comfortable.

I bought two pairs of those mold-at-the-match jobs about ten years apart and neither was very good.

I second going to an ear doctors office and getting custom ear plugs. I did it and right now I want them a little tighter. <edit> sorry I did not realize that I essentially said the same thing a few posts ago.

I don't have TMJ, but I find custom plugs more comfortable than foam plugs.

Perfectly inserted foam plugs may cancel out more noise than the custom plugs I've owned, but the custom plugs are easier and faster to insert properly. They are also easy to clean and last a long time.

Since the mid-1980's I've had two sets of custom plugs. I lost one of the plugs from the first set somewhere around 2000, causing me to get the second set. I've had that second set ever since. I use them when shooting, mowing the lawn, or anything that may produce loud noises. I'm very happy with the custom plugs.

I like to double up and I like the thinner sets of electronic muffs when shooting rifles and the behind the head ones when shooting pistols.
