I done escaped from the world, and all it's worldly worries. Nothing open but Coyotes right now, so I found me a nice spot, had a fire, and got out a book. On the State Land close to my house. Took lots of delicious munchies and a big roast beef sammich for lunch. Ever take pre-fried bacon for a trail-snack? It's the best. And nothing, not nothing better than strong coffee cooked up on the USGI canteen stove.

Whenever I got tired of sitting/reading/eating, I would take a hike, so I took four hikes, making a "four leaf clover". Imagine my camp the center, and the route of the four hikes would be the "leaves" of the clover. Had to make sure Bandidos or bushwhackers weren't sneaking up on me.

Also took the TC Hawken I've been working on out for a spin, now that she's all done and sighted in, and my Plains Pistol for a sidearm. Nope, didn't see a thing. Saw some "movement" once, but don't know what it was. But best of all, didn't see any "news", or know, or care, what was going on back in the world.

Took the kids up to lake louise. Wife worked nightshift all week so it was a good way to get the kids out of the house so she could sleep. Same idea, unplug from electronics and news for a bit, save for the camera on my phone which didn’t have service there any way. Caught a nice burbot and a small lake trout, and saw a couple caribou. Kids had a blast.

a fine looking day camp.
I often do that on my birthday, March 7th. I spend the day in the woods, scouting, walking trails, marking trees for firewood, cooking lunch, and generally escaping from civilization.

Its a good way to spend a day.

Exactly. On my B-day I usually climb a smallish mountain up North. (Hanlon Mountain) It had a fire lookout on it at one time, and a road to it, but now the road is just a trail, been closed for thirty years or more. Enough of a hike that it's rare to see anyone else up there, but very doo-able if you take your time. Those are the best birthdays for sure. Sure do like the tack-work on your rifle.

Those nightshifts are killer. Some people can do them okay, I never could. Haven't ridden my sled this year, usually go it alone, and just haven't been motivated to go. Which I will regret this spring for sure. bbp4.jpg

I pretty much unplugged the day I retired. Watch the bird feeders a lot. Did a lot of squirrel hunting this past fall. Only tv I watch is Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. When Jeopardy goes off the idiot box gets turned off. Course do watch a little football and baseball. Help my buddy on the farm when needed. Headed up there in a little bit

We were having a new roof put on the house, so the sat dish was temporarily disabled- so we couldn't watch TV even if we wanted to. The first thing I did was text friends and request that they don't watch the ceremonies in order to lower the ratings- they could always see them later on the youtube if they felt the need to do so. Then I spent part of the day at the range and shot a couple of black rifles and pistols, and dropped off the head from the buck I shot Monday (also with a black rifle) at the taxidermist for a euro mount that I will be placing in a glass enclosed end table I will be making from reclaimed fence boards. After that I dropped by the local zoo and donated the discards/scraps from that deer to feed the big cats and wolves. Later I went to the dojo and tried to kick a bag to death. Dinner consisted of the tenderloins from the previously mentioned buck, cooked by Mrs. Fl-NC while I was at the dojo. It tasted much better than the poo sandwich I expect to be having for the forseable future. I tried my best to have a productive day.

Wow, you got a lot out of that day that will live in infamy. Or something like that.

You’d like lake louise (ak), routinely gets four foot seas in the summer.
Lake Eufala north of I-9 in Oklahoma gets that all the time. A south or north wind at 15 is all it takes. 20-25 will get you 5-6 footers. I worked a bass tournament last year that the wind was sustained 30 with gusts to 45. Let’s just say I’m glad you can’t sink a Ranger. We were completely vertical in a 521C several times. And weren’t going but about 4mph. We had to run the bilge pumps the whole trip back. 3 miles to the boat ramp and took us well over an hour. We guessed 9’ waves. They should have called the tournament. I’ve been a bass fisherman pretty much my entire life. Since I was about 3. That was the first time I’ve ever been really concerned in a bass boat. And I’ve gone airborne jumping waves more times than I could count. It’s a great fishery. But seems like people go missing there every year.

But I’ll bet you Louise is a far sight prettier than Eufala. Actually just looked it up. It gorgeous! Holy cow. There must be a thousand lakes around it. You win.

My favorite big water in Washington State are Lake Roosevelt, Priest Lake, and Lake Pend d' Oriel. (look 'em up!) My moment of greatest concern was crossing Pend d' Oriel in a blow, in the kayak, and often finding my bow and stern sitting on wave-tops, and air underneath me. ! Very "tipsy". There is a lake near me called Rock Lake, not that big, but narrow and long. Sits in a canyon with cliffs on both sides. Only one point of access on one end of the lake. (about 2 miles wide,10mi long?) When it blows, it can get as nasty as a big lake. Lots of people drown there. Not too long ago, Parks&Rec out of Cheney turned a kayak class loose on it, wind came up and two of them died. But very cool and kind of remote lake, no houses on it, and most of the shore is big rocks. Hunting content: we used to take a canoe out there, and shoot giant carp that inhabit the lake. Guy in the back would paddle slowly along shore, (had to be a very calm day) and the guy in front would watch for the carp with his pistol. Some of those carp were 50 pounds or more.

Its not all that pretty, not really any mountain views, just swamp and scrubby pines all around. There are COUNTLESS lakes that are only accessible by snowmachine or float plane. Hope to explore more of those when the kids get a bit older, bound to be some amazing lake trout fishing. Its also prime caribou, wolf, and bear country, and decent moose hunting country. Seen this guy right off the dock last summer, but he had only 3 brow tines in a 4 brow tine unit. Cant wait to get back up there this fall.

We are crawling with moose where I live, but the whole state only gives out a very small number of moose tags, and none at all here. Was bumping into/jumping up moose whenever I was hunting the state land this fall. Didn't get a elk or deer, as they all headed for private land or the Wildlife refuge when seasons opened.

We all have our definition of pretty. It’s not surrounded by lake houses and boat docks. The water isn’t red. No constant sound of traffic crossing bridges and highways. Might actually get to see wildlife besides 10,000 cormorants and occasional deer. Doesn’t have trash and debris all over the banks.

It has big smallmouth, giant catfish (all 3 primary species), excellent crappie and brim, and 30lb 5 fish limits of largemouth aren’t unheard of. But I’d trade you in a second.

Milford Lake in KS is the same. And the wind is ALWAYS blowing at least 15mph there. Got caught in my 1636 Jon boat with 6Hp evinrude as a storm blew in. Bow and stern on top of 3 foot waves and nothing but air under the center.

Recorded 40mph winds on Marion reservoir in the same boat. Watched a 100ft cottonwood fall and spook up a couple deer.

I worked a 12 hour day and then went home, enjoyed a cold supper and watched both CNN and Fox news. Both were great comedy entertainment. For the life of me, I can't understand the calling themselves "news".
Isn't that the truth, none of the major news outlets report the news any more rather they try to make news. What happened to the times when news reporter gave you both sides of a story rather than trying to slant it to reflect their opinions. It's one of the most if not the most destructful issues facing this country.
