Howie,

Black MZ is no longer in production. When I tried it about a year ago I found it did not duplicate black powder's performance in either velocity, consistency, or accuracy.

Yes black powder is dirty. Always has been. Some brands are cleaner than others, still...just clean your guns!

Dave

Dang...I clean my guns even if I just dry-fire them, within hours. Naw, just kidding. Don't dry fire my guns. !! But if I did...!!!!!
Not familiar with Black MZ...what velocities does it produce compared to equal volumes of Black Powder?

BlackMZ was basically rebranded American Pioneer Powder.
A lot of BPCR shooters use APP, both the 2F and 3F, loading anywhere from 55 - 70 grains with light compression.
But most seem to use the 2F even though it's as chunky as kitty litter.
They say that it produces less pressure than black powder and recommend loading it with light compression.
There's no need for lube since the residue is soft and acts like a lube, or one can use smokeless lube.
I don't have any APP velocity data for the .45-70, but that would depend on a variety of factors anyway.
Posts #1 and #25 show where you can buy APP instead of BlackMZ. --->>> https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...-powder-is-back-in-business-available.875655/

I load 777 in my 45/70 roller, you can't compress it much as velocity goes all over the place as well as accuracy. Take the bullet you are going to use, hold it next to the case and mark the case where the bullet will be seated, fill the case just a tiny bit more and seat as usual. You should get better results by not trying to compress the powder a whole bunch.

You will find among reenactors, or living historians, a range of experience with black powder arms, just as you will with the general shooting public and modern firearms. I am by no means a rare expert the proves the rule, and in fact do not consider myself more than "well experienced".

Loyalist Dave

Then you sir are the rare exception. I was in ACW reenacting during the 125th through 135th cycle and in years of the hobby, I’ve found almost no reenactors that I would trust as a source of black powder shooting information

Download 777 by 15% using cornmeal filler to approximate black powder loads. It can batter reproductions if you go too hot. Ask me how I know.
What repros? Trapdoor? Rolllng Block?

I think there's more to it than just being "hotter" than black. I think the pressure "curve" could be...wait for it...different. Keyfer, did you ever mention what type of rifle you are loading for?

Loaded 3 jsp 300 gr 60 gr equivalent pyrodex ,I filled remaining space with grits. I drink my coffee black I didn't have any creamer. I plan on killing a soda bottle Sat. if it's not raining.

I think that soda bottle is gonna die. He's got to go down! That should work, but now no grits for breakfast. What kind of rifle are you shooting?? I have two trapdoors, and a pre-safety, pre-guide gun Marlin.

That's cool, the one with the super long barrel? I know of one of those I could get cheap, but as I have three .45-70's already, I'd probably not use it much. Seems like the only one I actually take out into the wilderness anymore is my Trapdoor carbine. Still...I am tempted of course.

Handi rifle 24"

I was getting Black MZ cheap from Sportsmans Warehouse. $10 a pound. I liked it.
Put it through my 10 gage double at clay birds. Did awesome. Anyone know where
to buy it cheap again? Was a very easy clean up. Black Powder is getting scarce.
One worry is proposed changes to the laws relating to liability of gun and ammo makers.

You can’t put enough BP or subs in a case to be a problem for a Handi Rifle. As outlined above, load T7 (not pellets) or Pyrodex to bullet contact with no more than incidental compression and enjoy. Clean with hot soapy water, dry, oil with Ballistol. Enjoy!
