A friend is offering me the following:
1. Glock 30, with a Wolfe barrel & trigger that was worked on at the factory with 3-10 round mags
2. An AR-15 rifle (he built it himself and guaranteed to shoot well)
Both are in like new condition & each sells for $500
I can only buy 1
I don't have an AR-15 or a compact carry pistol so no duplication.
Which would you recommend and why?

Two correct responses which is precisely why I'm not sure which to go with.
I'm trending towards the AR-15 because I believe it's the most likely to be banned but I would get more practical use out of the Glock.

I don't care for the 29 or 30. Too big for carry and I prefer the full size in those fat 45 and 10mm.

I also don't care for the AR. But depending on the parts it could be the better (or worse) deal. I have a white oak upper that was more than a Glock 29.

Neither are too appealing. Rather the glock be factory though. Does the ar have a carry handle or flattop. I guess these times are tough and both not too bad of a deal. The g30 would be my choice with limited info as I like the 45 but both to me are a little high.

You said you don't have a "compact" carry pistol. Do you have a carry pistol at all? If you don't, I personally would go with the Glock.
I myself have a couple of options when it comes to carry pistols (none of which are sub-compact by the way), and I don't currently have an AR. So that's what I'd get if I had an extra $500 to spend on a gun I'll probably sell or trade off before long anyway.;)

Do you have any pistols? Are any of them Glocks in .45? If so, are you accurate with it?

What other magazine fed carbines do you currently have?

I'd go with the AR if you shoot something other than a Glock well simply because you could get your money back or even profit from selling it, but I'd test fire it first regardless of what your buddy says.

I would go for the AR. Glock makes excellent pistols, and I have many- I just don't care for the Glock 30 as a CCW piece due to its bulk in thickness and the weight when it is fully loaded with 10 rounds of 45 that weigh about as much as 20 rounds of 9mm.

Flip a coin. Both are excellent choices. Hard thing about selling an ar someone made is the person buying it doesn't know the build quality. Just my 2 cents.

Agreed. Could be a great upper (noveske, white oak) on an assembled lower that was "built" would be worth more than a Glock by far.

Could be an Anderson or psa kit and be worth half the Glock.

Home built AR is too broad to say.

I guess you sort of have an apple and an orange before you. Rifle and a handgun. Sort of a matter of what you want or what suits you. Me? I would likely take the handgun but only because I have all the AR rifles I'll ever want. I have plenty of handguns too but would likely opt for the handgun. Problem is that's me in my case with my choice. You need to decide what works for you and move on a decision you make.

Just My Take

I would prefer the GLOCK had the factory barrel. I have a GLOCK 26 and felt the Wolfe barrel wasn't as good as the factory.

I sold off the only AR I ever had, more than a year ago. I don't miss it. My Glock 30 would be my "last to go," and a CZ Custom SP-01 is my "never sell under any circumstances."

I'd go with the glock, contrary to some of the opinions , g30 is a fantastic pistol and very likely the best glock. But i'd want the factory barrel too, you say "wolfe" barrel, you may be referring to lone wolf, which I have a low opinion of. If the factory barrel isn't included, i'd skip the glock.

I like rifles. I like handguns. Of my rifles, ARs are at the top of my list for functionality. I think they are ugly, I have no attraction to their history, but I love what they do. Regarding handguns, Glocks are also ugly, I likewise have no historical attraction to them, and I have other guns will do what Glocks do (or better). If you need a carry gun, I’d get something other than a Glock. If you want a rifle, I recommend an AR. I cannot recommend this particular AR without knowing more about it, but I would think that it should be pretty easy for me to recommend it above a Glock (for my tastes).

I like subcompact pistols. I have an xdm 45acp compact and like it. The Glock 30 is a little smaller than my xdm so should carry a little easier.
