I have wanted a Model 25 chambered for 45 Colt on and off for a number of years. The 45 Colt chambering seems to be hard to come by, more seem to have been chambered for 45 ACP. I already have a Model 1955 Target the predecessor to the Model 25, chambered for 45 ACP, but I had been watching, on and off, for one chambered for 45 Colt.

I'm not buying many guns these days, actually going to be downsizing my collection a bit. Not going to auctions or stopping in local shops these days either. But for some reason I was looking on line at what was available at a local shop. They actually had two Model 25-3s in stock, both chambered for 45 Colt.

The Model 25 is a big, N frame revolver, most were chambered for 45ACP, only a few were chambered for 45 Colt. In 1977 S&W released the Model 25-3. This was the 125th Anniversary Commemorative and they were all chambered for 45 Colt.

I went to the shop, and the two were almost identical. One was wearing Magna grips and the rear sight blade was ever so slightly bent. The other was wearing big, smooth Oversized Target grips, and came with the mahogany presentation box. They were both priced the same, so I went with the one with the wooden box and unbent rear sight blade.

All the goodies were in the box, but there was a big empty hollow in the lid, with leather straps, and it was not until I got home that I realized this was for Roy Jinks' 125 anniversary book. I just happen to have a copy, so it fits nicely in the lid of the box. Dunno what was in the little circular hollow.

I'm really not much of a fan of Commemorative models with their fancy gold inlaid markings, but this is probably the only opportunity I will have to find a Model 25 chambered for 45 Colt.

The marking on the barrel simply says 45 CALIBER. No mention of whether or not it is 45 Colt or 45 ACP. In fact the original paperwork that came with the revolver called it out as 45ACP. I did not think to bring any 45 Colt snap caps or dummies with me, but we were able to drop a 45ACP round into the chambers and it fell all the way down, so I was pretty confident it really is a 45 Colt.

White outline rear sight.

I took out my 45ACP Model 1955 Target for a comparison photo with the Model 25. The 1955 Target is a little bit older, it left the factory in 1955. Yes, it is a five screw. Sorry for all the glare, no outside photos until the foot of snow on the deck melts.

Roy was not able to pinpoint exactly when this one left the factory, but I am saying 1977, because I think that is pretty much when they shipped. By the way, I think they are stretching the 125 Anniversary thing a little bit. 1852 was the date the 'First Partnership' between Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson was formed, when they were making what became known as the Volcanic models. It was not until 1857 that the 'Second Partnership' was formed that led to building Tip Up, Top Breaks, and Hand Ejectors. But I have seen photos of big celebrations of the '125th Anniversary' at S&W from 1977.

Gonna have to load up some Smokeless 45 Colt for this one, I don't think I am going to want to put any of my usual Black Powder 45 Colt ammo through it.

By the way, although I have lots of single action revolvers chambered for 45 Colt, I only have one other double action, a New Service from 1906.

Very nice, Driftwood. I haven’t seen a .45 Colt model 25 in a couple of years. I would love to own one someday.

When I lived in Oregon the Cabela’s in Tualatin always seemed to have 125th Anniversary models in their Gun Library but they always wanted $1300 and higher for them. They had at least 6 in a 3 year period.
I never came across any other model 25s in .45 Colt the entire 5 years I lived there. Odd.

These past couple of years I have been in California. The only 25s I have see were on auction sites with silly high prices or were 625’s chambered in .45 ACP.

Looking forward to hearing how it shoots.

Very nice acquisition! I really like the S&W Model 25's in .45 Colt. I have a couple of newer variants, the 25-9, but not the Model of 1989 version with the un-fluted cylinder. Mine are the plain Jane type. Here are the two 25-9 next to my 625-7 .45 Colt Mountain Gun. The 25-9s were from 1990-91 and have the longer stop notch in the cylinder.

I could be wrong but the cylinder on that S&W 25-3 looks to be the same length as the S&W 25 .45acp. I had an early S&W 25 .45 Colt and the cylinder was
longer than my S&W 25 .45acp. DR505's S&W 25 .45Colts appear to have longer cylinders.

Nifty. I had an opportunity on one at a very low price, many years ago. After a hard think, I passed on it, primarily because my other experience with a D.A. in .45 Colt was not great: the little rims sometimes got trapped under the extractor and then required the usual contortions to remove. I still kind of regret it.

The missing bit, by the way, is a silver coin with the likenesses of Messrs. Smith and Wesson stamped upon it. As I recall, it was unimpressive.

I am still nauseaous about one I passed on a few months back.
It wasn't priced yet so the guy at the counter called me later to tell me the price. $650.00.
Now this one was new enough to have the lock, but beautiful nickel plated and 45 Colt to boot.
I went back two days later and the boss had raised the price to 1800.00.
Damn my luck! I should have burned a blue streak over there the minute I got that call.:what:

My cylinder measures about 1.652" in length (eyeball with ruler, not calipers).

M25-3 and M25-4 in .45 Colt have the short cylinder. Previous to that, the .45 Colt versions had a long cylinder and the M25-5 and later have the long cylinder.

Mine all have consistent cylinder throats at .452" and are very accurate with lead bullets.

With the Model 25's, I've been led to understand that the even dash numbers are chambered in 45 ACP while the odd dash numbers are chambered in 45 Colt.

Model 25-2's and Model 25-5's seem to be the models with the largest production numbers. I've never seen anything other than a 25-2 or a 25-5, I do have examples of both, and not that I have done any rabid searches either.

I'd say the 25-3 is a find.

Very nice Driftwood. I'm not a fan of commemorative guns either, as I typically find them garish and tacky. However that one has a modest elegance to it.

Nice find.

Yup. This:

Not sure how much they are now to buy on ePay or some other similar site but I am sure I wouldn't bother replacing it.

Nice piece of hardware. I notice S&W is just as stubborn about not putting Colt's name on their guns as Colt's is about not putting S&W's names on theirs.

Mike Venturino wrote an interesting article about the "All American .45" back in the April-May 2020 Handloader magazine - BUT the locals here have demonstrated Venturino to be completely wrong about the .45 Long vs. Short controversy and just another journalist hack writer... so take it with a grain of salt if you look it up.

As said, -3 was the basic commemoratave, the -4 was fancy. There is a thread running on the SW board about what is thought to be a -3 upgraded to -4 fanciness.

They have approximately the same length cylinder as the -2 ACP/AR and .45 LONG Colt factory length is about the most they will accept. The -5 has about the same cylinder length as a .44 Magnum so you can play Elmer.

Here is my Model 25-5.

I got it years ago to hunt Ohio whitetails. It worked better than the 44 Magnum I had been using. It fell out of favor with me after I found I prefer the 45 ACP, N frame. If I don’t trade it away, I may convert it to 45 ACP.

Driftwood, I shot blackpowder out of mine with no issues. Cleaning was unremarkable. I have also used the standard Unique load with 260 grain bullets.

I had a beautiful 25-2 for a while but the chamber throats were so large that accuracy was very hit and miss, even with .454" bullets. I sold it and finally found my dream revolver: a 25-9 with 5" barrel. According to Linebaugh it's good for 25 kpsi loads, and shoots small groups with every bullet and powder I've tried.

I looked for a long time for my two 25-9s (photos above). Found one on Gunbroker...horrible pictures and no one ever bid high enough to hit reserve. I asked seller for additional photos via email. Beautiful pics showing a pristine revolver. I was high bid for 4 auctions of the same revolver but never went high enough to hit reserve. Seller gave up and I got it at my offer ($725 in 2013 = $835 in 2021). Here is one of the Gunbroker photos followed by a photo I took (still have original socks, they just don't fit me well):

The other 25-9 came my way when I mentioned I was looking for one while over on the S&W forum. Got a PM with an offer.

Patience is sometimes rewarded.

The only commercial loaded bullets I found won't fit the 25-3 is the Leverlution factory load and the big Garrett heavy bulleted loads of 280 gain and bigger. Mine has a .455 throat and shoots ok with Federal 225 grain Hollow point factory load. I only shot mine about 24 times in 30+ years I had it, it was too pretty and I have a old Triple lock .45 and a couple Colt New Service .45 colts that I shoot a lot of reloads in and a passel of .45 Colt Single actions. The 25-3 is beautifully made and pinned and recessed and the polishing is outstanding. Being it is a cased limited run I never bought it as a shooter. They are selling now for around $1800+ in perfect shape. The cutout in your box fits the Smith and Wesson facial medallion
