While out doing some test loads for my 6.5 creedmoor today, I was able to recover quite a few of my bullets to see how they expanded. While looking for mine, I found this one in the picture below. It looks like it is a .224”. What would cause this flattening behind the cannelure? It went through some OSB target backer and into the dirt. I also found a .308” bullet that looked the same, flattened behind the ogive of the bullet. Were they tumbling after they went through the OSB?

Thanks for the replies, guess I’ve never seen or noticed it before.

I don't think it's even necessary for them to keyhole ..... Bullets that have open bases often extrude lead a bit. The infamous "magic bullet" that went through President Kennedy's neck, then through Governor Connally's chest, wrist, and implanted in his leg had a little extrusion in the rear, IIRC.

I agree with the others about the bullets going through the OSB and hitting the berm sideways. These bullets appear to be full metal jackets, which is why they didn’t mushroom during passage thru the OSB but they were disrupted due to various density in the board.
Try shooting through a cardboard target and if you can find the bullet, it will most likely not be flattened.

These weren’t from my guns, just laying in the dirt berm about 75 yards past the target backer. I figured it had to do with them hitting the OSB and starting to tumble. Just curiousity is all.
Good news is, I was able to recover most of my bullets I shot, and was able to weigh them to see how much weight they retained and how much expansion they had. Pretty impressed with the Barnes LRX so far, hopefully they’ll expand in an antelope or deer roughly the same.
