Woohoo! Along with the fireworks, I got to do some backyard testing.

I never get to do this since we only own an acre of land, and I havent registered at a shooting range yet. With all of the fireworks going, I decided to do some shooting to blend in (neither of my neighbors were home and I had a proper backstop).

At first I gathered two phonebooks, and shot them strait down with my .22 Marlin 60. I was using Federal Lightning 40 grain Solids. It penetrated about 80 percent of the way through the first one, and after recovering it, I was amazed at its expansion. I cant find the bullet right now, but it flattened pretty well.

Second, I got my Glock 19. I shot down into the phone book using WWB 147 grain JHPs. The bullet penetrated about 90 percent of the way through the phone book, and when recovered, it flattened pretty well. Expansion was about 18mm at the widest point, and was pretty irregularly shaped.

The next shot was with Winchester 147 grain Ranger T RA9T. The bullet penetrated through about 1 1/2 phone books, and when recovered, showed no expansion. However, the base was flattened with material coming out, which led me to believe that the bullet had tumbled. However, the nose of the bullet was 99 percent undamaged, and the HP was clogged with phone book.

Next I tried shooting milk jugs filled with water. My first two attempts were unsuccessful, with one bullet exiting the 4th milk jugs and bouncing off on the 5th, and the next bullet exited the side of the 4th jug, and neither bullets were recovered. However, my third try was successful. The bullet blew the first jug up pretty well, almost splitting the jug in half, and nearly blowing the cap off. The bullet was recovered in the fourth jug, and had dented the back side. The recovered bullet expanded pretty well, around 17mm in diameter. The top of the bullet was completely flat, unlike bullets that I have seen over the internet, so maybe this was a little hotter?

Anyway, after the final shot it was nearly midnight, so I called it quits. I will try to test WWB JHPs in waterjugs tomorrow.

My conclusions so far- The WWB looks like a good expander, soft enough to expand through most barriers, including bare tissue, bone, ect. However, penetration probably wouldnt be that great after penetrating hard barriers. Still, it performs pretty well for an inexpensive JHP.

The Ranger is excellent. It would seem like it would give awesome bone and hard barrier penetration, and although it might not expand, it may have the tendacy to tumble. In soft tissue, it seems like it would perform very well, with good expansion and deep penetration.

I will try to get some picture tomorrow, but right now im too tired.

Nothing very scientific, I know, but im just starting out. When funds allow me, I plan on doing ballistic gelatin testing with all the proper tools, including a scale, micrometer, chrony, ect.

:)

I just got in not even a minute ago from shooting a phone books. The ones originally used in my test were dry, becuase I wanted to see how they did against hard material (phone books might not be that hard but at 1000 FPS they are!).

The ones I just shot were soaked for about 3 hours, and soaked up quit a bit of water. I only shot once, a WWB JHP since I didnt want to waste more milk jugs, and it penetrated almost 6 inches, with the base sticking out of the second phone book, which wasnt as wet. Expansion was very good, about 16mm at the widest point. Nearly the exact same as the Ranger.

Well, since its only one day after the fourth, I decided to pop off another round, using WWB into milk jugs to see what the difference between water and newspaper it. It penetrated three jugs, almost exiting the third. Expansion was more violent, being about 1/8 inch shorter than the previous bullet, and with the petals much closer to the base (bottom) of the bullet. However, although the maximum recovered diameter was the same, the average recovered diameter was a little smaller since it was slightly oblong in shape. The lead appear to be battered more. Im guessing the bullet uses much softer lead than the Ranger, becuase the Ranger showed no sign of this. Both Ranger bullets were smooth. Im guessing Winchester uses harder lead for better penetration, both to achieve a higher retained weight through barriers, and to provide slower, controlled expansion in tissue, allowing for more penetration.

The WWB was obviously a more aggressive expander, too. The enterance hole of the Ranger milk jug only had a 6 inch crack in it or so, compared to the 10 inch crack with the WWB (the crack was about 70 degress, 5 on one side and 5 on the other). The exit for the Ranger, which still had its cap on, was from top to bottom. The exit for the WWB was from top to bottom, one corner to the other, and followed the bottom of the jug for several inches. It was wider and very jagged, unlike the Ranger.

To shoot in your yard, you have to register it as a shooting range? Just curious, where are you? That sounds strange.

Scientific testing done by some of the big name people is great, but nothing replaces hands-on testing of the ammo you want to test when fired by you from your own gun. At least you know all the real parameters of the testing.

Thanks everyone!

DNS- Im not sure whether or not it is legal to shoot in my yard (I am outside city limits though), but what I meant was I have to shoot in my yard until I can register at a range, which is about 15 minutes from here.

BTW im in Crossville, TN.

I do like testing though. I wish I could do it more. Sometime in the Fall I hope to be doing real ballistic gelatin testing, with all the necessary equipment.

Winchester Ranger fodder is great stuff. I've been plenty impressed by Winchester's 147gr Ranger after several informal play dough tests. Though I thoroughly respect Winchester's spicy 127gr +P+ entry in their Ranger line, the 147gr Ranger tends to be more accurate out of both my carry K9 and G19.

Below is the results of one of my informal tests from a Kahr K9. Left to right: 127gr +P+ Ranger after bare play dough; 147gr Ranger after bare play dough; 147gr Ranger after 2 layers of denim before play dough.
