Another Johnson but wait

FWIW, that would be my SWA guess. A quick Google image search shows scoped Johnsons with bases mounted in roughly this same area, though the original rear sight is usually sacrificed in the process.

I'll check Canfield's book tomorrow -- I vaguely remember seeing a postwar ad for Johnsons that included scope mounting as an option.

Incidentally, did you notice the scoped Johnson that appeared briefly in the Captain America movie?

Page 222 of Canfield's Johnson book has a Winfield Arms Corp. advertisement from the 9/53 issue of American Rifleman, offering Johnson 'Custom Sporter' rifles in 30-06, .270, and '7mm' for $159.90, or $228.50 w/ Weaver 4x scope mounted, $233.45 w/ Bushnell 4x mounted. The illustration shows a 3-ring mount and no rear sight (but, strangely, a hooded ramp front.)

I'll do a scan when I have the chance.
