I bought a sporterized 03 A3 that has a rear aperture sight installed. The rear dovetail has been ground down to provide vertical movement for the sight and the receiver has been drilled and tapped for the single sight screw.

I want to mount a scope and have the receiver drilled/tapped for weaver scope bases.:)

Are there any concerns regarding diminished value for the scope base drilling? I'm thinking not because of the mods already done for the aperature sight.

Thanks

The value is about as diminished as possible, do what you like to it.

The problem is getting a rear scope base the right contour and height to fit the ground down receiver bridge. There are bases for '03s, and there are bases for A3s, but you might have a hard time matching up with whatever Bubba left of this one. There are a few side mounts still on the market, if that is what it takes.

On this note....I have my Grandfather's A3 that has yet to be tinkered with, and I'd like to install a scope WITHOUT altering the rifle (if possible). Is this possible, and if so, what mounting system would I use? I believe I've seen one system out there (don't remember where it was) but I wasn't sure if there was/is a better/best way to go about this.

thats a s&k mount and they are very good. the front of the mount is secured with a band clamp that goes around the receiver ring and the rear of the mount is attatched by clamping itself between the stripper clip slot and the rear of the action. a little bit of wood will have to be removed from the stock for the band that goes around the front ring, its .250 wide x .035 deep and will not be noticable if you do a good job.
i bought a bunch of the mounts a few years ago from a gunshop that was closing down so the owner could retire. the only problem with them is you can strip out the nut that goes on top of the band clap if you overtighten it but s&k will send you a new one.
