GSSF

Sort of.
Local lane rental range runs GSSF Indoor and I got to one outdoor within my combat radius this year.
I go mostly to encourage my protege to shoot more. She shoots a Glock for everything and did not take her long to be beating me 2/3 of the time.

There are more, I'm sure. I shoot the River Bend (Dawsonville, GA) match and the National. I've shot the National at South River, Griffin and CMP. These are two of the largest and the toughest to win.

here. haven't shot a gssf match in a while though. seems like our local indoor matches have slowed down a lot.

If you want to go watch some bad gunhandling and dangerous habits, GSSF is one of the top destinations!

Unfortunately, I've also found this to be mostly true...also if you want to see examples of folks who don't want to help tape targets between runs.

I've worked three GSSF matches within 100 miles of my local range and it has seldom been a positive experience...the swag and prizes make in slightly better, but not enough to have volunteered again in a couple of years

I've shot in several matches, both outdoor and in the indoor leagues.

That's the fault of the range where the match is being held. Generally the match ROs and RSOs are volunteers from the local range. The place where I have most commonly shot outdoor matches is very strict on gun handling because that's the culture of the range where the match is held, and they supply the people actually manning the shooting positions.

Right.
Only place I have shot GSSF outdoor was run to the same safety standards as USPSA or any other. Heck, the guy at the plate rack looked at me funny when I said I wanted to reload off my belt, so I just put clips on table like everybody else.

I’ve threatened to try GSSF events out, but locally they seem to constantly fall at times I’m either already busy or out of town.

Maybe someday the stars will align.

Stay safe.

It's the fault of the people that show up that GSSF attracts.

There's always at least one RO/RSO per shooter and they are supposed to control the situation. The events are expressly intended to allow brand new shooters to compete--so they are also designed to be run so that brand new shooters can show up and shoot without causing unsafe situations. In the matches I've attended, that's how it has always worked.

Shooters are given frequent and very specific commands--how to place the gun case on the shooting bench, which direction the gun should be pointed when the case is opened, safe directions, what to do when the string is ended, etc. and are very closely supervised.

If there is unsafe gun handling at GSSF matches, the fault lies in the ROs/RSOs who are failing to do the job they agreed to.

I guess, in one sense, there's some truth to your comment. Since the matches do get brand new shooters (as intended), and since someone who has no experience handling guns is unlikely to do a great job of it on their first try If they are unsupervised, one could blame the people who show up. However, since the matches are specifically designed to be friendly to brand new shooters, there's no excuse for the ROs not providing the supervision/control necessary to keep things safe. Especially since there's always at least a one-to-one ratio of RO/RSO per shooter.

I'd like to try it, organized events aren't common around here and if they are, I don't know how to find them.
I tried to join a club a few years ago and found all the folks there unwilling to accept outsiders so I kind of jyst gave up. I can't commit to even one day a month and I don't have time to travel far but if there was a gssf match within an hour that I didn't need to do a ton of pre requisite stuff for I'd be there. Shooting a g30.

I'm not familiar with any type of sanctioned shooting requirements but I'd be willing to show up early with a few hundred rounds, pay an entry fee and do my best. I doubt that enough though. I've seen a few matches that were hours away, I'm not into driving all day to get my butt whooped so until I see gssf match closer to home I've got to pass

Here's a list of GSSF outdoor events.

That should give you an idea of which one is closest to you.

If you're looking for general firearm competitions in your area, here's a place to get started.
http://www.nrapublications.org/regional-report

You can put in your area, check/uncheck boxes and then see what comes up. Click "All NRA" to select everything, then click it again so nothing is selected. Then select "Tournament Calender" box, and you'll get the matches in the area you specify. You can click through them and see if anything looks good.

A second option is to select the "Places to Shoot" option which will give you ranges in your area. Since shooting events happen at shooting ranges, ranges will often have a calendar of events they host.

That, sadly, is far too often the reaction new or newer shooters get when searching for any type of match or competition. Hell, I've gotten sideways smirks and guff from the know-it-all's on both sides of the gun counter when I'm about to drop a bundle on a gun that doesn't meet their preconceived standards. This immediately leads me to take my $$ elsewhere.

For a hobby that is constantly under fire by media and their politicians, and seriously needs more people involved to stem the tide before it's regulated into oblivion, shooters still haven't learned how to be open and welcoming to others who are interested and learning.

Good and attentive RSO's help make this possible.

Stay safe.

One more thing to keep in mind about the GSSF matches. While they do have performance prizes--awarded based on scores in various categories, they also have prizes that are awarded by drawing/randomly that anyone who enters is eligible to win. A friend of mine won a G21 as a random prize the first time he competed.
