Recommendations For A Decent Revolver?

4" pre-lock, fixed sight S&W model 10 for home defense.

If it has to be .357 magnum then the same but S&W model 13.

The model 13 is serious, like a heart attack serious.

OP, same goes for the stainless model 65 which is the same gun as a model 13 except stainless.

The best handgun I've ever sold was a model 65. If you find one, I can highly recommend it or the model 13.

Since your Dad already has a 9mm semi-auto, I'd suggest the Armscor/RIA 9mm revolver to go with it. Going one step further, I'd load both with Federal's standard pressure 147gr HST ammo.

Going to try some different revolvers now. I'll let you all know how it goes. Thanks, everyone for all you're help.
Oh... had $483 in my change jug! So, can probably spend about $800 plus get some ammo. I'm really only worried about 200 rounds of range ammo and 50 rounds of self defense ammo or so.

:)

I am always on the lookout for an "FBI" ie. a 3" roundbutt Model 13 that I'd put a Tyler T adaptor onto. They are really rare in Canada. Like I've never seen one for sale in 40 years. But the search continues.

Did they make the 65 in this configuration?

I have an M19 but would love a 3" 13.

Yes, the model 65 was made in a 3", round butt, fixed sight version. Perfect.

Rossi 38s are not to be sneered at if Interarms Rossi era (and stamping). I have an 88 and an 851 bought for very moderate prices which are really good shooters in 38 Special. When I had an action job done on the 88, the snubby, my gunsmith said the internals looked just like an S&W.

If I had to choose only one, I would go with my stainless 3" factory DAO Ruger GP-100. I have had several Smith & Wesson's, Colt's and even a Dan Wesson. All in .38special/.357magnum and the Ruger is my favorite. Great trigger, accurate and built like a tank.

The topic is still going. OK, second post.

Tonight I took a S&W Model 43 Airweight Kit Gun, .22 LR, off the rack to use for hand and finger exercise while watching TV. Yeah, that’s the rationalization... I like playing with it. Yes, the .22 LR is a lousy choice for self defense. The Model 43 Airweight is an expensive little revolver. But I smile every time I hold it. It truly is like holding a palmful of air.

Put a lightweight .22 in Dad’s hands. If you see a smile, trust it.

I had a 4" rimfire SP and a 2.5" .357. You could hit a man-sized target at 10 yards, but not choose where, exactly.

Strong? Yes. Accurate? No. YMMV of course.
I have a 2” SP101 in .357 mag. Never any issues with the trigger. Can shoot hand sized groups at 7 yds. Love it.....

I bought my dad a S&W Model 10 as soon as I was legal to buy on my own (1994). I wish I had bought two! He loves it and keeps it bedside and nicknamed it "Morgue."

It's a Model 10-6 with the target hammer and wide but smooth trigger. I guess it was a police gun at some point, as the grips have been replaced (with large, well-worn wooden grips) and there is a lot of holster wear on the heavy barrel. It's a dream to shoot.

Either that or a Model 15 is what I'd suggest and frankly, I feel very-well armed with either be that at home or out and about.

Throw me into the "find an old Smith and Wesson" group. I wanna say I got my Model 66 for $550 about two years ago.

Yep...and make it one with adjustable sights too. I'd opine that a good used Model 66 Smith is just about perfect as an all-around gun. Good caliber for most uses, SS construction for outdoor use far from chimney smoke, and that famous Smith DA and SA trigger. 'Bout all any of us really needs....Rod Here's a pic with a 66 & it's blued steel beautiful brother...a Model 19.

my bedside piece is a rossi, j frame revolver, five shots, 38sp, 3” barrel, loaded with wadcutters, fitted with pachmayr grips. i got it used 5-6 years ago for $200, maybe put 200 rounds through it. this inexpensive rossi is an easy shooter, works perfectly fine and if i ever must use it, and it thus disappears into a police evidence locker, i won’t cry too hard.

I have one too, an Interarms Rossi 88, and wouldn't part with it.

So... I was searching for a revolver for my aged Dad. He picked one out, and we were set up to go purchase a used Smith and Wesson Model 10 I found at a local gun shop in what appears to be good condition for around $550. As we were discussing the purchase, my Dad all of a sudden is like, "You know, my health sucks. I would rather you buy a gun you're going to shoot and enjoy and pass on to my grandkids and your grandkids. I want you to buy what YOU want and what YOU will shoot and enjoy." I tried to talk him into going ahead with the revolver, but he said "No." So, now I'm going to spend the money on a nice 1911 for me to shoot, enjoy, and pass on to his grandkids and possibly my grandkids. I'm going to give him some time to change his mind, but I don't think he's going to.
