Browning A-Bolt: Whats your experience?

I dissembled it, cleaned the bolt and stuff. Works better now. My guess is it just wasn't cleaned for so long. Plus for such a LIGHT rifle (in comparison to the big cartridge) the recoil is a beast and can wreck havoc on the parts.
Part of why I want to replace the synthetic stock is so I can reduce some of the recoil. I don't think a high powered rifle has a place being this light.
It never ceases to amaze me why gun manufacturers continue their insane quest for ever lighter rifles. That is probably more responsible for the 6.5 creedmores popularity than any qualities the cartridge possesses.

There is a place for lightness after a certain point. Like a .308 DMR I handled which was way too heavy. None consideration was put on the weight of the parts. It was a complete Aero Precision build but taken who no consideration towards weight. The result is a rifle which is too heavy to comfortably shoulder. Too heavy is possible but too light is also possible. Anything within a 8-11 pounds range is ideal in my opinion.

I had an early A-Bolt in .338 that I was not happy with. It had extraction problems and wasn’t great in the accuracy department. I kept it for about 5 years then ditched as a lost cause.

I have a buddy who’s A-Bolt in .338 also had a an extractor failure on a moose hunt on a raft hunt far from civilization. Fortunately his one and only shot of the trip killed the moose.

Overall I was unimpressed with the early A Bolts.

That sounds awesome! Add it to ArmoredFarmers BBQ menu .

That .375 Ruger packs some horsepower! I recall my old A-bolt .338 kicked pretty vigorously with the factory wooden stock. What did you restock it with to handle the increased recoil over the original 7mm?
I was just looking at that thread the other day thinking I should put something in there......
I got sheep in the air fryer tonight so I might do that.

The stock I used is off the Euro-bolt the European version of the A-Bolt rifles. It has more drop at the Comb and heel as well as a raised Monte Carlo style cheap piece which I think was an adaptation from the Euro bolt stocks...... not 100% sure.

I changed the stocks on that gun just because I wanted to change the stock. I put the kickeez heavy squishy pad on there to deal with the 375 after the restocking.
Just changing stocks change the recall from a direct back slap into a more rolly slower feeling recoil. It didn't seem to increase the impact on my cheek which some stock designs do so I like the change. Usually though I prefer it to come more straight and less up.

Have had satisfactory results for years until this spring.....7mm blew up. Repair center couldn't tell us why.

What the case looked like, looks like what happens when you have a case head Separation.
Yeah it looks like gas went straight down the raceway into the firing pin shroud.

Or perhaps it went around the steel body inside of the aluminum shroud on the bolt, And impacted the shroud on the firing pin..... Did it blow the magazine out?

The A-Bolt 2 is my favorite of them. I have two of them and love them. I have a stainless stalker in 7mmwsm and it is by far my favorite hunting rifle ever and a tack driver. I've taken deer from point blank to almost 500 yards with it.

Reloads. Re-checked the load data and it was in the middle of recommendations. Little disappointed repair center couldn't tell what caused it. Open to hearing ideas to what it may have been.

you can start a thread discussing the possible reason. It would be fun to figure it out. thats scary it blew up like that from a new factory gun

I have a 7mm Mag that is very accurate. 200 yard groups average under 3/4 of a inch. Gun has a brake and was purchased that way a couple of years ago. My wife had a mule deer hunt ant the only load I tried was a 140 grain Barnes TTSX over Retumbo. Put a Nikon FX100 on it sighted it in. She killed a deer at a laserd 642 yards with one shot and he may have went 20 yards.
I took the gun to Saskatewan on a Mule deer hunt, I had a issue with the bolt rotating past the cocking piece and I was unable to put the bolt into battery. Luckily the first shot did the job.
Not sure how that happened but until I figure out it won’t be used on anything that could eat me or stomp me, lol

That rifle, in that chambering could find a very happy home in my safe.

Guns blow up, it's a fact of life, but most are designed when they do its to protect the shooter one reason why the 98 mauser is such a good Design and I'd say the a-bolt did fine. This is the big problem with the rn-50.
My good friend all but lost a eye this past December when his .270 model 70 pre 64 let go. Reminder to wear safety glasses. He had just taken his off to make a scope adjustment. Reloads? Yes!!. He pulled the Bullets and weighed the balance of the loads he had. All were fine. The case is still stuck in the chamber minus the back half. Destroyed stock, extractor, floorplate, and I’m sure other parts including his eye.

This is all making me hesitant to reload 7mm again

The loads might be fine, but the brass might have been overused and developed a ring/incipient case head separation.

I had another friend that had a case head separate in a 7 Mag Remington 700. He was hunting and shot at a deer. Tried putting another round in and couldn’t. He was not hurt, gun was fine and I was able to remove the case from the chamber. I guess you never know
I reload a lot and so far I have not had any issues. But I do have pause about something happening to one of my grandkids.
