I’m looking at someday consolidating my rifles. I’d like one to fit all the purposes that have so far necessitated multiple rifles so I was thinking a semi auto 308. I’d LOVE a saiga but there’re hard to find these days.

What do you suggest?

You may be able to build up an AR10 if you're patient and have flexible requirements.

You may not get the exact barrel/ handguards etc that you want if you're looking for specific parts, but you'll find something that'll work.

Did someone mention FAL?

This was from back in the day when I believed that everyone NEEDed at least 1 full fledged battle rifle. Since then...not so much. I don't hunt with it, but I have shot 1 doe...just because I could. I may take it pig hunting this year just because it's easy to mount a night scope to and I haven't finished my 6.8 SPC2 dream pig upper yet. With 150 Nosler BT handloads it's a solid 1.5MOA gun....with surplus FMJ it groups like your average .308 battle rifle.

I've also owned an M1A at the same time, but the FAL is still with me.

I have a PTR 91 that I like, but I think they’ve crept up over a thousand lately.

I appreciate all the suggestions especially that of the FAL which I really really love. From what I’ve seen it’s difficult to make those New York State legal and less I want to pin the mag. If I pin the mag it would be difficult to load. More so than an AR platform.

You might find a deal on a model 100 Winchester, came in several calibers. Saw one about 2 years ago for 600.00 at vintage arms in Endicott NY.
My own Model 100, .308 Win is going on 60 years old - it was my first big game rifle. Dad had a Model 100, .308 also, and later on he bought himself a Model 100 in .243 Win as well.
If someone does get themselves a Model 100 though, they need to check and make sure the firing pin work has been done on it. Back in the '80s (I think) there was a recall on Model 100s. I don't remember for sure what the deal was, but it seems like there were some real bad issues with Model 100 firing pins breaking. The firing pin in my own Model 100 had already broken by that time, and I'd had a local gunsmith replace it, so I never did send it in. I should probably look into it further, and I will if I ever start using the rifle again.:)
