I was watching MeTV again this evening after work and the M*A*S*H episode recording ended with a pretty clear view of the gun rack in Andy Taylor’s office.

I know this was visited a few years ago, but I didn’t see any definitive answers and at least a couple of guns I see here weren’t mentioned.

I see what looks like a Win 1894 next to what appears to be a smaller-framed, square-lever Marlin lever gun sitting in spots two and three from right. Maybe a 39M?

There is a SxS shotgun second from left, and a GI-looking sling on the rifle between the SxS and Win 1894.

The bolt gun on the far left looks like something that was sporterized, while the one at far right looks like an old military gun.

Someone previously said there were Garands in the rack. That may be a Garand with the military looking sling. As for the others, does anyone have any better guesses?

Stay safe.

Yeah, I think I've seen a Garand in there too. My question is what Barney Fife carried. I always thought it was a Smith & Wesson, but a guy at my gun club swears it was a Colt.

One source I found says the guns changed from time to time, but generally (and it sounds like a match for your pictures except for the M1897)) they were, from left to right:
1-Winchester Model 70 30-06
2-Winchester Model 21 12 gauge SxS
3-Mauser 98K 7.92mm
4-Winchester Model 94 30-30
5-Winchester Model 1897 12 gauge pump
6-Mannlicher-Carcano Model 38 7.35mm

There is another lever action rifle in your picture instead of the M1897 shotgun.

So was it M*A*S*H or the Andy Griffith Show?
I don't recall seeing any SxS or lever guns in any of the episodes of M*A*S*H I've seen...mostly Garands, with an occasional M1911. :D

Also lots of M-1 and M-2 carbines… a few SKS and AK looking guns, I recall a scene with some ppSh and once a Mosin Nagant was carried into the mess tent :).

Stay safe.

Colt Official Police I think.

And what type bullet was in the one cartridge he carried in his shirt pocket?

I'd be willing to bet the make up of Andy's gun rack was very similar to Barney's revolver: Whatever the prop man could scrounge up at the time.
As I recall, the weapons in the rack changed from time to time.

The number varied between 4, 5, 6 in a rack with six places and the types varied, including:

Winchester Model 70 bolt action,
Mauser 98k military,
Winchester 94 leveraction,
what appeared to be a Marlin 39 leveraction
M1 Garand rifle,
double barrel shotgun with long barrel,
Winchester Model 1897 pump shotgun with riot length barrel,
Winchester Model 12 pump shotgun with long vent rib barrel,
Carcano M38 military short rifle.

In one episode Andy was gifted a long barrel Remington 1100 autoloading shotgun.

In another episode Barney carried a bolt action rifle with a split bridge receiver, bolt handle turned down in front of the bridge, sporter style stock with a Mauser type magazine floor plate. I have seen photos of Sheriff Andy Taylor's gun rack with a sporter stock bolt rifle with the bolt handle turned in the middle of the action that may be it. Have no idea what it was.

As a kid I loved glimpses of the gun in rack as it did change.
I would swear I once saw an SAFN 49 in the rack but the glimpse was to quick to ID caliber.
Before Egypt dumped their 8 mm Mauser the most common in the US were 7x57 and .30-06. In the 1960’s I dearly wanted a .30-06 and would have settled for a 7x57. so I was excited to see one anywhere. If I remember correctly a loaded Garand clip of eight rounds of Black tip cost a whopping $0.50 in 1968 at the surplus store. Loose mixed .30-06 or 7x57 in the blue box from Inter Arms was basically a nickel a round. Of course that was the first year I managed a buck an hour…..
