Does anybody have a window mounted gun rack or really anywhere in their truck? Are they worth it or not really, because I would like to have one but I have a small truck so before I go measuring and looking I'd love to see some opinions! This isn't a really good photo but the only one available atm since my truck is in the body shop from a guy T-boning me in a parking lot, but as you can see my truck is relatively small (it's the one on the left) 995819_530709516994056_459066038_n_zps36ee9d46.jpg

Yeah they still make them, you can find them online. Thought it would be a cool way to carry it in my truck since police find it a problem in my shotgun seat.

Yes they do. They are cheap and adjustable.
There is also lots of other options like behind the seat racks and the very nice but expensive interior roof racks.
Cabelas and Amazon have you covered.

The classic type are annoying, up to being a pain in the head. In your truck you will spend most of your time banging your head on the stock, and will get more then one gouge from it when you are doing stuff in the cab.

Try JC Whitney. They used to carry the window racks, the overhead racks the bolt to back of seat racks and the seatcover pouch that put the gun under your knees while sitting in the seat.

Hope you're planning on taking those in at night, cuz around here at least its a guaranteed way to get them stolen..

The rear sliding window will prevent using one side. Remember back in the day we didn't have those type of luxury options. You can buy them at Academy thou for about 10bucks +/-. I have one side in use as a hat rack in the back of my truck.

I didn't even think of the rear sliding glass window. Im thinking about if I can find a mount mounting it maybe below the window, since I just have a single cab I have that whole panel behind my seats so I might just end up making my own rig right there.

I too wonder why they went down in popularity. I hate laying my shotguns, etc on the rear seat. Since I have young kids, I still have car seats in my truck so i can't lay them in a case there. Having sometime of rack or something on the window would really come in handy.

They went down because theft went up. Used to be it was not a concern. I had one in TX 35 years ago, wouldn't even have an empty rack in the window as it signifies I own a gun. get the ones that go above your head or behind your seat

Looks like you have a perfectly acceptable bed box. Put it in there when on the road.. take it inside as you would a rear window mounted gun.
The bed box should be longer than the rear window is wide, and the gun can also fit diagonally. Pad it of course.

I haven't used a window mount gun rack in a few decades but did build an over head rack for two of my Jeeps.

I cant carry fewer tools haha, that's how I make my money, people call me with car problems or home maintenance problems and I go help them out. But jmorris that overhead rack is great! Was it a bought piece or you build it yourself?

the problem with carrying in seat is if you have toddler seats in the truck. Also don't see how theft is a concern as you would only use to and from your destination. I wouldn't leave them in truck.

Yeah I wouldn't be leaving them in the truck. And for the seats thing I only have a regular cab truck, so that leaves me with 2 seats and what the call the middle seat where the console is but its not worth squat unless its like a 4 year old. Then the seats are pushed up against the back of the cab and my steering wheel doesn't adjust (baseline model, don't even have carpet in the floor) so if I move them up my knees will be banging the steering wheel. So my only option is the window, ceiling, or on the floorboards. When I don't have a passenger I typically lay it in the shotgun seat but if I have one then its either lay it in the floor and let it slide around behind the seats or the passenger will be putting the term "Riding shotgun" to real usage. I'm just trying to find a way to carry my firearms better without them getting banged up or passengers holding them.

We have a set of the cheap (suction cup) window racks. We use an old pickup to haul the targets out to the home range, it's a two seater, so the window rack is a plus. I think I'd like something like that in the extended cab truck when carrying 3-4 people. Probably wouldn't leave guns in them overnight in town (but many do around here). I could see the use for hunting, driving section lines, etc. They'd be cased in the bed for highway travel.

I like the overhead idea also, the extended cab has lots of real estate up there. How does that homemade rig attach? Is it bolted to the car? Extended to apply pressure and some velcro or something to stop it from sliding? I like that plan, but would want 3-4 guns up there in the bigger truck.

I had a window rack in my truck in high school that I kept a 6 D maglite in. It worked fine with the sliding back glass. I kept my guns cased behind the seat.

rear window racks

I have never been able to make them work with sliding windows.
Something moves, bumps, falls, hits my head or scratches or I want to open the sliding window. I like them in others trucks but they were a pain for me. There are other places for them that work better in a truck.

Contractors used to keep their 4-foot levels prominently displayed in these racks mounted in the rear window of their pickups. (From some of the work I've seen, some never left the truck.)
