Signs of accuracy confirmed

Its been a while since i posted on my rifle build and today i confirmed my final load. My previous post found here https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/signs-of-accuracy-new-shilen-barrel.887540/

As it turns out my build is very accurate. More accurate than i am on most days. The surprising part is the bullets which happen to be Barnes Matchburner 140 gr and to be honest and i went with Hornady brass rather than my tried and true Peterson mostly because of the shortage. I guess what matters most is results.

So far i have seen nothing but accuracy. I feel i am blessed to have the components i do have and to be honest i did not expect this much accuracy from a barnes bullet but its definitely proven itself worthy.

What has not proven itself worthy is me and a bipod. I just shoot so much better with bags or bag rest combo.


Enough chitchat how about some results? Well today i managed a .254” group with a load i have tested 2 prior times and on my worst day it was .44” @100yds. With an SD 5 and ES of 11 over 15 rounds i think i can lock it in and plan my trip to ThunderValley for some 1,000 yard plinking.

i will be shooting prone when i Go to the 1,000 yard range. Testing done on bench.

The bipod i do have is nothing to write home about. Though it might work okay on the ground it definitely is not ideal on a wood bench with nothing to load against. Not to mention rubber feet and nothing to load up against.

I think i prefer a rest with a bag on a bench because its adjustable. But two bags get my best results.

at some going i am going to need a good bipod.

as for this trip i wont be using it.

the gun is probably bouncing on that wood. put a t-shirt between the bipod legs and the table to allow the feet to slide.

It would. Its not ideal for wood for sure and i don't think its really suited for grass either. Its something you pop on an ar15 for plinking maybe . My bags are my go to on this one.

Correction on the group size. It was closer to .293”.

I must have made an error when using my calculator. I mean looking at the group you can see that there was at least a bullet width between the top right and bottom left.

I have found the 6.5 CM to be very easy to load for. I had a bunch of factory Hornady 140 ELD-M so when I shot those up I just used that brass. I had read that a 140 grain bullet over 41.5 grains of H4350 loaded at 2.800 COAL is a "gold standard" so I tried that with 140 ELD-M bullets and it shot sub half MOA with good ES/SD (dont remember exactly what it was). When I ran out of 140 ELD-M and they became hard to find I bought a box of the 140 SMK and tried the same thing. Again sub half MOA with good ES/SD, just a bit lower BC than the ELD-M.
