Boy glad you guys are back. Got my first bolt action a couple days ago. It's a winchester model 70 made in 1946. I was wonderin' is there anything I need to worry about with an an older gun in .30-06. Such as not shooting some of the heavier bullets? Sounds kinda like a rube question but I thought it better to ask than assume. Just finished cleaning it, about to take it to a smith to get the headspace checked, any other services I should get? Thanks guys.

Seeing as the rifle is used, you might want to have a competent smitty check it out for headspace and a general going over just to see if a previous owner hot rodded a bunch of loads through it.
You should not have to worry about shooting heavier bullets out of it at all-pretty much anything made to SAAMI specs is going to work just fine.
Otherwise, thats one good lookin rifle!

My model 70 was made in 1939, and I shoot whatever I want in it. It doesn't need to be babied. It's a very strong rifle, made with good materials and great workmanship.

Mine was made in 1942, a heavy barrel Target model.
I am setting it up for Long Range F-class and am shooting heavy bullets over good stout powder charges for the distances. No problems and excellent accuracy. I would like to surprise some of the guys with stainless and plastic but I don't have the experience. But I will have fun.

That is a fine looking piece of tigertail but the contour at the bolt stop looks strange. Is it a custom stock? Looks like it.

What are the scope and mounts? They are not ordinary, but the picture is not good enough on my monitor to identify.

Thanks for the compliments and info guys. Here's a better pic of the scope and mount. The scope's a 4X Unertl Hawk, not sure what type of mount. The thing I don't like about the scope is the reticle is very fine(thin).
