Come hang with us, the Woodstock of black powder shooting. The North South Skirmish Association will be holding our National competition on the weekend of 18-22 May in Winchester VA. All manner of Civil War arms will be shot in live fire competition and that includes artillery. Visitors are welcome and admission is free although you must register at the gate. Your wallet might take a beating however on Sutler Row and Back Creek Gun Shop (one of the best distributors of the holy black) is right at the exit from the range. Darn right I'll be there chucking lead from a variety of arms and even serving on a 6lb rifled howitzer crew.

Video shot by Tambi of Scheutzen at our Nationals, I'm in it, but just as part of a cast of thousands.

Thanks for posting this. I'm going to spread the word about the N-SSA shoot to folks I know are getting interested in shooting black powder. And it's a great way to pick up some BP without the hazmat and shipping fees. Also, the Back Creek site shows they have musket caps and regular percussion caps (Dynamite Nobel) available. At least it doesn't say they are out of stock.

Dang. Just drove thru your area on my way to New England and home. A few weeks too early.
Would love to attend one some day.

If you see a 2nd model Maynard, pick one up for me. :)

There is a gentleman on my team they call "Mr Maynard" cuz he has sooo many of them. He shoots one in competition and since we're on the same team I give him a load of crap when he misses with his beloved Maynard. And I then promptly use my Sharps to obliterate the target he just missed and then it's on like Donkey Kong.

The N-SSA is one of the best kept secrets in competition shooting. Not too many know about us and we're sorta like competition crack. Once you try it, yer hooked. We'll be holding another "Recruit Skirmish" later this year in Winchester for noobs to try out. What happens is ya sign up, show up, get trained on how to shoot the guns, get issued ammo, then shoot your own "skirmish". It's run by a friend of mine, Rob Harrison, and almost all the personnel there running it are NRA certified Muzzleloading Instructors.

Seemed Covid really shut down the N-SSA. Are there lots of liberals in that organization?

Damn- I'm putting a 12 lb Mountain Howitzer together now but won't be done until next year......might go and smell the smoke anyway! Thanks for the heads up!

Wee bit far to drive from Southern Arizona, but looks like grand fun!

Ohh it is great fun! There is no other shooting sport around where you shoot together with your friends as a team against other teams with the clock running and accuracy counts as much as speed. I've shot 3G, USPSA, IDPA, NRA HP, tried SASS, and others, but all of them are individual stuff. Our competition is designed to simulate a Civil War battle line without the 2 way part. I have a good friend on our team that lives in TX and I only see him at Nationals these days. We'll take spots on the line next to each other, the smack talk starts, and when the horn sounds, it's on like Donkey Kong between us to hit as many as we can. Our little "private" competition helps our team over all and we have a grand time doing it. He shoots a Maynard in carbine class and I'll give him a load of crap about his "Red Ryder" while he criticizes my Sharps and all the while, we're both whacking targets as fast as we can load and fire.

The N-SSA is definitely one of the top shooting organizations...I've been shooting with them since 1978. And my father was taking me up there far earlier than that. Let's just say that I remember the old barn. :)

FWIW, I'm with McGregor's Battery.
