And then came the Trapper

Looks like an 1895G Replacement. Where is the traditional black with walnut? Looks to be a winner. Hate the look of the Skinner Sights. Not a show stopper. The sight looks like an add on and not part of a package.

Would love to see the muzzle flash with some black powder loads. !!!! Kind of a cool little rifle.

My 1895G is accurate enough. If the new rifle is as accurate or better, up to the normal quality one expects from Ruger, it would be a great day for the return of Marlin.

I would think the 1894 in .357 or .44 would sell better overall than these .45-70 guns. A lot cheaper to feed. I’m holding off for a gun that doesn’t cost 2-3 dollars a shot to fire. I don’t reload.
You can load the 45-70 pretty cheap, and it opens up a whole new world for you. Everything doesn't have to thump you, and its still a potent round. ;)

Ive had a number of 44 and 45 Winchester trappers and always liked them. Always just more partial to the Winchesters as I always found their actions to be a lot smoother. The 357 and 44 Marlins done up as a Trapper would be cool too. And with any of those, reloading is a big help there too, and in the same respects as the 45-70's.

I had an early Rem 1895G and it was good gun. I tried a set of the Skinners on it and hated them. Much prefer the XS type Ghost Rings.

The Trapper version looks good, just wish they would offer a standard lever and plain butt plate (checkered steel since Im wishing :)) too. Hopefully, Ruger doesnt follow suit with the traditional "rough" Marlin actions.

Always liked the full size versions with a full mag tube too, but they were always pretty scarce and pricey when you did find one. It would be cool if they brought them back too.

The original Trapper had the Skinner sights so their inclusion is keeping with previous Trapper rifles. They are great folks, but I understand some might not like their (Skinner) system. I have the Skinner on my 39A and rather like it. The Remington Trapper used a black painted birchwood stock, the new Trapper has the dark laminate. To be clear, the Trapper is not a new model, this is a new release for Ruger owned Marlin but the Trapper goes back a ways. It makes sense to me this is the next release as both the SBL and the Trapper were the top sellers for Remington Marlin and both are under continuing high demand by working outdoors folks and outdoorsman. I am sure there will be a cowboy release and a traditional 336 in .30-30 and .35 Remington. If I had not just grabbed a new SBL I would be into this Trapper (but I do prefer the SBL 18.5/19 inch barrel I suppose and the mirror finish of the receiver).

I am not just saying this to counter the inevitable carpers but the metal work on these new rifles is the best I have ever seen on a Marlin and the internal improvements including the deletion of barrel shims is a big deal as is the heat treat pre-machining of the forged parts and action improved timing. An article for the previous Trapper to compare:

Again, I don’t reload.

And plenty of fellers don’t or can’t. I can’t. A .45 Colt’s 1894 would fit the bill far better for us guys.

Come on Ruger get off your butt and make some ‘94s!

Just pointing out, its your loss, and in all sorts of directions. ;)

And guns like the one above, are the perfect incentive to start! :)

I like the XS sights as well. This morning when I was looking at the email from Ruger and looking at the photos and video I was thinking I would prefer the XS sights. I have them on my 336 and my Winchester 94 carbine. Really nice sights.

I like the looks of this gun. If they look as nice in real life as they do on the website I could be tempted.
I do wonder how the nickel plating on the bolt would hold up, though?

Looks like this is a new model which wasn’t previously ever combined by Marlin - has the 1895SBL pistol grip and pepper laminate stocks, but without the scout rail and XS ghost ring sight - but not the standard 1895GS sights - AND of course, it has the new threaded barrel as a standard feature.

No, the Trapper is not a new model, again, this story is for the Remington-Marlin Trapper, same as but for the painted birchwood stock:

You may be thinking of the STP with the buckhorn sights and laminate?

I too prefer the XS sight system over the Skinner and over the current Ruger-Marlin in house rail on my new Ruger Marlin SBL. The new rail is fine, the XS is better IMO and since I have both I can say that. The new system for the SBL is not bad, just not as precise as the XS system. But, for some folks they may well prefer the tritium tube of the Ruger-Marlin system.

For those who may not know…..Skinner is an American manufacturer of aftermarket sights out of St Ignacious, Montana. There is a whole line up of interchangeable parts for them. Apertures of various diameters, bases, finishes etc. For a ghost ring sight like set up on the Ruger/Marlin leave the aperture’s out. Not disagreeing with the XS comments mind you. Skinners have somewhat of a cult following on lever guns. Pretty sure many of their web site offerings can be used/interchanged on the Trapper at least on the rear sight if not also the front.

Huh, I missed that model in 2019 - but I’ll say I certainly prefer the laminate pepper stock over the painted birch wood. And of course, certainly prefer Ruglin to Remlin…

Yeah and I think the STP goes back to around 2007, originally had a ported barrel. All of these, SBL, Trapper and I think the STP were all introduced under Remington though a few early versions have JM stamps prior to moving the manufacturing. I am not an expert on that so if somebody knows the facts please correct me.

Calm down Bro, he was making a broad point.

But specifically referring to the 94’s, Ruger leadership already said the next like from Marlin would be the 30.30 and .35 Rem models. Pistol caliber guns will be later.

So close.

Should have been a straight grip stock.

Maybe they will get it next time around.

I really like/prefer straight grip stocks, but realize most of the world thinks a pistol grip is a must. It would be nice for them to offer one though.

I just have a feeling that one in .35Rem would be a real winner and would sell well. If I was in the market, that's the one I'd go for. .358Win would be a good one, but I don't know what type of action that will or will not fit into.
