if I removed the magazine disconnect device from the MKIII and substituted the Tandem Cross hammer bushing to take up the extra space, could I use MKII magazines in the pistol?
No. The MKII uses a heel catch to hold the magazine and the MKIII has a push button release under the trigger guard. Now if you were to cut the notch in the MKII you may be abe to get it to work.

new ones might have the cut out. I'll have to go in my cabinet and see what is there. I certainly could be mistaken. My guess is any new Ruger mag would have the cut out. I have some I got a few years back, so - I'll check it out and report back.
I looked at the ones in my MK2 and none of the 4 have a cutout for a thumb release. I figured the new ones would, but they don't. Two of the mags I think are original to the MK2, two I got off e-bay a few years ago OEM, in original packaging. Now I'm wondering if the base plates might be a little different too, but don't know.
