Sorry about the poor picture and I should Wright the text down but thought someone may find it interesting.

you see women in articles today and seems like they get headlined for hunting, a example is are state hunting reg book, I don't think there a man over 18 in the pictures in the book. It's good to get more women and kids into hunting and maybe when this came out some women may have wanted to go hunting.

I don't know the reason she was in the local paper, she passed in 1997 I was 6 so never asked her. Back then my grandparents were sill dairy farming in Montgomery N.Y., About 5 miles from the original shrade factory. My grandfather had the hunting licence but my grandmother is the one that did the hunting, probably because gramps had the farm work and was a full time Mason. She was 39 here if I mathed right.

rifle was a 1943 byf 98 mauser in 8mm, wasn't pretty and had the handguard taped on. But it sure did shoot. Dad resorted the gun in the 98s and was offered good money and sold it, really wish we still had it. Like I said nothing special about the deer, she hunted every year and killed many deer but the paper man seen something to report on.

Unfortunately her page probably not seen by many that day, the paper came out November 22 1963. Talk about bad luck lol. Figured to share.

My grandmother was born into money, grew up in queens and was in here time a pretty famous clothing designer, see was on the little rascals shows, the one Pete was my grandmothers dog. It was the pit bull, we have some pictures somewhere. Then she left the city and I believe it was the ny state school of agriculture, remember her saying she was the first women to graduate from the school. She then started farming by her self, I live 2 miles from the first farm she rented. She met my grandfather when she was buying hay from him.

Her brother Billy the only one from her side of the family was a photographer for national geographic, he one also one of the uss Indianapolis, this we didn't know until he died when they contacted us about the 50th anniversary they were planing with living survivors. He was married to one of the hanes daughters, yup the underwear hanes, but think she died hound and never know much about it.

I'm glad you shared this. I wish there were more such stories back then. I have an article about my aunt taking a monster buck (her only one) with the very same Rem. 742 I took my first buck with. Pardon the weird look of the page, I didn't want to fold or unstaple the picture from the 3 page missive she wrote about her experience. She had a way with words, she wrote my Mom's side of the family's genealogy.

That's great nice buck for sure, think we have some other pictures of deer and shot, think one was a 14 point. Think this one was 180 pounds, pretty good size back then since there were so many hunters in the 50-60 here. I've shot doe topping 200lb.

Thanks for posting.

Growing up in WV in the 1940s and 50s i knew one lady who hunted. Ms Goldie hunted small game and deer. One fall a guy shot Goldie, mistook her for a grouse. Most of the shot was stopped by the lady's coat. That incident never slowed down her hunting.

A much younger female college classmate is a serious bow hunter. Since 2000 Cindy has taken three trophy deer on a property i own. One scored 166 Boone and Crockett points, best buck scored 188.

In Spooner, Wisc. school is out the week of gun season. This was the case in the 70's and 80's. I don't know how long the gun season is now but then it was 9 days and bucks only, limit ONE.

My sister never hunted until her boyfriend talked her into going with him. He gave her his model 94 .30-30 and put her on a log. She shot and he ran back. She thought she missed a buck because it ran off. The BF found it 50 yards away ... an 11 point. It just missed being the big buck in the local newspaper's contest. They had a write-up about it. She deer hunted a few times after that but always held out for a bigger buck so she was skunked.
The 1st issue after deer season ended was always filled with photos and stories of the big bucks killed.

Grandma had a farm when i was little she squirrel.hunted and shot pheasants n quail.
No deer around then..

When she became a widow she kept the farm a few yrs then sold it and moved out of state.

I found the farm I hadnt been to since I was 6 yrs old, by backtracking my old kindergarten bus route.

The barn was gone, tornado. The woods was cut down.

Looked totally different.

Sometimes its best to not go back for a look.

I know the feeling, makes me sick thinking what has happened to see old farms and the land we hunted a fished. One old farm my greatgrandparnts farmed, known as fairweather hill was quite large in its day, the big house must have been 8-9 bedrooms. My grandfather had 11 brothers and sisters so they needed the space. The house burned down 5-6 years ago, I was owned by the mother of Lisa banes the actress. My grandmother cleaned houses and when I was young I remember going and helping there, the house had a large dog kennel. And then I smell perina dog chow I think of the house and my grandmother.

Another sad story, I remember lisa banes being there a lot her and her mother were very nice. Don't think I ever remember her being in movies back then. But last year she was killed in Manhattan by a guy on a scooter, the guy ran and they eventually cough him but let him go for some reason. Lisa was a very lady.

Bad things happen in big cities and usually the cops don't care.
I live in the "sticks" but development is making it tough to remain in the sticks. I was born in Chicago and always inherently knew that there were better places. I left home at 16 and found that almost anyplace is better than a big city.

I enjoy visiting Chicago.
Food, concerts etc.

Id like to check out every mom n pop restaurant LOL.....you know, where the locals like to eat.
Some rough looking places, see the signage from the highway/interstate.........usually painted on the decaying brick exterior.
Love the character of old big cities.

Don't mind the gentrification either.
Hipsters, eh.........they don't bother me.

I also enjoy being away from everybody, could live in a tiny home w 2 car detached garage, pond, and garden.
But Id still go to concerts/shopping other in the big city.

Like em just fine. But only for visiting.
