What do you guys think of this for a 308?

I just watched a video where a professional shot the Savage Axis Precision accurately at 750 yards in 6.5 Creedmoor.

For only match/competition/target shooting, I would tend to say 6.5 Creedmoor or PRC.

For only longish range big game hunting, 300WM, 338 WM.

For one rifle to do both, I would say something along the lines of 7mm RM or 280AI. 7mm gives a nice compromise of higher BC bullets, good sectional density, and plenty of retained energy for big game out to around 1k, with a bit less felt recoil than the .30+ calibers.

About a decade ago, that was my dilemma; I could only afford one rifle, and I knew it would probably fire a couple hundred rounds at paper or steel for every round on meat.

Ended up with a Remington 700 LongRange in 7mm RM. I like to shoot golf balls at 200yd with it, have scored hits on gongs out to 800m.

That said, I recently got a screaming deal on a Savage 12FV in 6.5CM, and since it's easier on the shoulder at the range, and the wallet at the reloading bench, I'm looking to sell the Remy and find something a bit lighter to pack into the woods...

@MR WICK

Playing an informal Long Range BR game with factory ammo in a factory rifle, some flavor of a Savage 12 would draw my attention, looking hard at the 243win models. The BVSS, F/TR, or LRT.

NOT the Axis Precision. That stock also is not built for bench shooting, nor the rifle.

One of the Savage Model 12’s, even better if you get it on their LRP action and trigger (competition models, grey stocks), but the Varmint models of the 12 (brown stocks) will shoot very, very small as well. @Nature Boy has a 12 BVSS with a Shilen barrel which holds its own in F-class (or F/TR?). My wife’s 12 BVSS is the either the most or second most accurate factory rifle I’ve ever handled also. 12’s shoot small.

It's just competitions at my local club. We have 464 acres and tons of competitions. I will only be shooting against club members. There are a lot of them but none close to being world class. I just want to have fun and eventually hit a target at 1,000 yards. I'm just a bench rest target shooter. For now.

But Verminator. Your recommendation is 6.5. Correct?
You shoot targets off of a bench, quite a difference.

You’ve made it plain money isn’t an issue, buy something custom intended/suited for what you want to do, you’ll never regret it.

Cabela's/Bass Pro had the 12FV as an exclusive with a cheap Tupperware stock for $430 for several years, and that seemed like a great price for a heavy-barrel Savage, with the caveat that one goes into it knowing it needs a new stock.

Browsed the website before Christmas and they were on special for $299. The Outpost nearest me had 1 6.5CM left in stock, and when I picked it up the guy at the counter said it had a "discontinued" code suffix in their computer. I might have gotten the last one in the PNW.

I'm not shooting F-class or anything, but in a Bell & Carlson M40 it's comfy and averages around .6MOA off a bipod without too much fussing on my part.

They also had a $50 mail in rebate that Christmas - $249 plus tax after rebate. I bought one at the time also in 6.5 creed and put it into an MDT LSS chassis, basically built a 10 Stealth BA for about $400 less than street at the time. It didn’t shoot quite like my other 12’s (kinda weird calling a blacked rifle a “12), but it shot small. Absolutely hated the LSS chassis though and didn’t like the 6.5 creed for what I was trying to do, even for practice, so it wasn’t long in my safe.

So. This should cover all bases.

Just my opinion, but no way would I spend anything like that on an Axis......not saying it wont shoot, just saying i wouldnt want to shoot it.

Agreed, by the time you're paying that much you might as well get a 10/11/12 or whatever their numbering scheme is this week, haha. If for no other reason than having a ton more stock/chassis options.

They’ve really gone up in price, like everything else these days I guess. I paid $900 just a few short years ago.

Not really, but it’s a much better rifle than the Axis Precision and in a better chassis. That MDT chassis is LITTLE better of a bench gun than the Ruger RPR, but it’s still going to handle like a field rifle, not a bench gun. That’s why it wasn’t on the list of rifles I’d recommend above. Even in that list, I conceded a bit to include the LRP and the VLP-BDM.

If you’re just wanting a heavy barreled chassis rifle which will shoot small, anything we’ve discussed here will do that. They’ll still be at a disadvantage in your local BR competitions since they’re not built for the bench, but they’ll shoot small. You’ll want a pair of bag riders on that rifle, an Edgewood bag, and a machine rest - the Sinclair is affordable and solid, stick a Protektor bag on top with a throat to fit your bag rider (I’ve not been terribly satisfied by the ARCA bag riders on the market so far).

Had to dig out the receipt, but my wife’s 12 BVSS was $800 regular price at Gander Mountain when we bought it… I hadn’t realized, however, that it was 13yrs ago already. Mine was more a few years later, must have been around that $900 mark, as I recall it being just under $1000 after tax, out the door.

I don’t know if you can find one but if you can get your hands on a Remington 700 Tactical in 6.5 Creedmoor, ohh they can shoot.

I have this rifle in .260 Rem. Love it.
Haven't shot competition, but 100 - 1000 yards, it gets it done.

What you are wanting to do, will determine what rifle and what cartridge; as several have said.

Just a heads up that I don't know if it's available everywhere, but my FFL buddy just told me that there's a sale going on for Seekins Havak FIT.
He just ordered one in 300 PRC for a significant discount.... If you've got an ffl that's willing to cut you a deal, might be a good option.
I was seriously considering selling some stuff and trying to get one myself, But the Chassis is wasted on me, and I'm very happy with what I'm using right now, so probably better to save the money for optics or something else.... Plate lunch maybe.....

I've never seen that DD bolt gun before...... Looks interesting, and the action looks familiar for some reason.

We are proud to welcome Daniel Defense as the 2022 Official Bolt Gun of the PRS.

This is a sponsorship announcement, nothing more. Pay your money and you can have the title next year for your own brand.

Starting to see them in #3 Gun competition .

I don’t think 3 gun competition - not any I’ve ever experienced at least - is advantaged by shooting a bolt action rather than an ultralight, go-fast AR, nor is 3 gun competition any representation of long range competition, or potential performance therein.

Cool rifles, certainly, and I’d expect they’ll shoot small, but a 20” 308 will get spanked soundly in even local BR games - and the DD rifles simply aren’t yet proven. There are safer and more productive ways to spend $1900.

It seems “Pro” and “Competition” are the new buzzwords, like “tactical,” has been.

This has been an interesting thread. When looking for a bench rest rifle, is a chassis type stock preferred over a more traditional stock? Or is a more traditional stock with a vertical grip the way to go? Seems that most bench rest rifles I see are the later.

I bought a chassis rifle and 3 or 4 trips later I ordered a traditional stock. My beard and the buttstock of the chassis were incompatible when shooting from a bench.

I'd consider having one, except there may be lots of expected "Franchi and Johnny" jokes. LOL!
