Impact of Trim Length

I have used the Sinclair case gauges and was really surprised how long the chamber necks were in 3 Rem 700s. 2 x .22-250 and a 7mm RM. As much as .030 over the listed max length. Don't have the numbers in front of me right now, but I remember I checked all of these guns multiple times thinking there was no way they could be that long. Got the same readings everytime.

I want safe and consistent.

As has been mentioned, too long and you can get erratic pressure.

Too short and you can get a build up of the dreaded carbon ring.

Either one is detrimental to precision and accuracy

Ugg, carbon ring is fricking awful.

Yes it is, particularly if you don’t stay on top of it. The problem is that a lot of folks don’t even know it’s there.

A bore scope is a great tool and they are cheap. Money well spent. Ill let it ride awhile, but once it becomes noticeable I gently clean the throat and first 6" of the barrel with CLR and Iosso and verify its gone. Its the only way to be sure.

For any case, any caliber I reload - once the case has reached max loading length I trim to trim spec length, then make sure that the die is set to seat the bullet to the lands. Good consistent accuracy. Powder charge is adjusted to the best accuracy/fps (over the crony) for that particular bullet that is seated to the lands. Found that COL is much more important than case length for me, so I just trim to trim spec when the case reaches max length.
