Anyone have any ladies in their life or know of women packing a 44 special for SD? Or who enjoy targets or hunting with one? Just curious

Had a room mate once that I mistakenly let shoot my M28 .44 Special bore out…. it became her HD gun and I had to use a crowbar to get it back.

Currently SWMBO has my Charter BullDog “wow grips are just like my little undercover, but really big ‘bullets’” and it has moved into her home work space.

Sorry but no SD carry ladies in .44 Special…. though I once worked with a lady that carried a full sized M1917 S&W (Brazilian contract) .45 ACP in her giant over the shoulder purse…. and she used it to run off a mugger with once.

"Targets" - my wife tipped over hundreds of steel silhouettes with her 44 Magnums (Ruger 10.5" Super "Silhouette" revolvers) back in our IHMSA days. After we quit the IHMSA game, she sent one of her revolvers back to Ruger and had the 10.5" barrel replaced with a 6" barrel. Once in a while, she still enjoys informal target shooting using 44 Special loads in that revolver.
BTW, I've posted before that my wife has some pretty bad arthritis in her right thumb joint. It's probably, at least in part, the result of her running literally thousands of full house 44 Magnum loads through her revolvers during IHMSA practice and competitions.

Can't speak to SD or hunting but about 35 years ago my wife and I took some girls from her office to the range. These were early 20s, petite girls just out of college who had never handled a firearm but were curious. Nice kids. After the safety lecture and practice they got to handle various handguns. I thought they would go for a Ruger Mk II or maybe a Smith with 38 specials. Nope. They all preferred a Taurus 44 special with a three inch barrel. And they were more accurate with it.

That was the last time I tried to predict what a woman would prefer in a handgun. Lesson learned.

My daughter-in-law really enjoys shooting my son's Model 29 with full power loads. My ex did also but when we broke up I didn't leave her any guns. I don't even think she shoots anymore.

I beg to differ. Neither your ex nor your daughter in law enjoy those loads and both are proving a point. I speak from a good deal of experience here and I’ll leave it up to you and Freud to decide if I’m onto something.

Ive had a number of people shoot 44 specials out of my 5" slab side GP-100 and SBH, same load which is a 240gr bullet @ about 1k. This includes all of my female friends who have come shooting. Only one found the GP-100 uncomfortable, and none had issues with the SBH.

A few have shot the SBH with full power handloads, and for the most part none have had an issue after some basic instructions on holding the gun and directing as opposed to fighting the recoil.

Both of these are big heavy revolvers tho.

Id expect a small frame 5 shot .44 special with even the mild factory loads to be a bit brisk for general practice, hell im pretty sure I would find them a bit brisk.

I think it really depends on the person, and the gun.
My friends daughter happily eats up rounds from both rifle and handgun that would, and have, made other people stop at one shot. Shes decent sized so dosent generally have issue with gun grips being too large, and shoots enough that the sound and concussion arnt scary or surprising.

Her sister on the other hand wont even be outside the car when one of the larger guns is being fired....granted shes quite a bit younger.

My buddies ex loved the SBH, even with full power 240s, but hated the GP-100 (only person ive seen really dislike that gun). Id assume because the GPs frame pounds the web of your hand more than the rolly SBH does, and she really didnt like that sensation.

Anyway, i dont think keeping up with the "boys" applies universally, but ive for sure seen it in action a few times myself.... usually to disasterous effect.

My daughter and my friends' daughters. Four young women aged 17-22. They are above average in height and strength.

As far as 40's, 45's, 44's, etc. go:

My daughter doesn't really want to shoot them. She will act nonchalant and do it if the other girls do, because she's not going to be shown up by anyone.

Daughter Three is about the same.

Daughter One kind of likes them.

Daughter Two will shoot them all day.

I think they would all find that firing 44 special out of a large revolver is actually NBD, but it's been a while since we got all of them together.

I can imagine the reaction of that mugger to looking down the business end of that 1917

Blue Heeler,

“IT’S OK LADY! It’s Ok, I am gone. I am leaving!”

Is what she told me spoken as he backed away.

She had never seen him and never saw him again.

I wondered if he could see the Silver Tip HPs looking out the front of the cylinder.

She had been mugged once before and determined not to be a victim. She was saved that first time, it was on the UF campus and as it happened two linemen from the fighting Gators were on a late night run and came upon her and her attacker.

Her chief regret on that one was not being there when they caught him.

Interesting topic, but is .44SP available for purchase anywhere?
Many years ago I found some at Dick's in Virginia, and the price premium compared to .44MAG was just not worth it. I decided to continue with .44MAG and just shoot it less.

SWMBO did use her CA Undercover .38 Special a good bit which is why she likes the grips on the .44 Bull Dog. Those little bitty Undercover grips had been replaced by Bull Dog grips before she got it.

She greatly enjoyed “Skinning” College students with it for Supper at a local BBQ joint.

110 yards gallon milk jug. loosers buy supper.

she usually actually hit it. Single action.

One late night at work (in a gun free zone) she was followed to her car and attacked by a man with a flat head screw driver. She ended up trying to kick him away sitting in the front seat and leaning back. He seemed to think this funny…. until she popped open the glove box and pulled out the Undercover.

He left, no shots fired. She was afraid to report it because of the “no gun” policy in that place and so never did. But she lived to this day through our wedding and two kids because she broke a rule.

… and now she has a “bigger” gun.

Hopefully her days of being assaulted are over.

I think everyone is different here. I know for a fact that my niece would always want to shoot my brother's 454 casull. Granted she only shot one or two times and never hit anything. I believe it was more of an adrenaline rush for her, even though it hurt her hand, she did grin and giggled through it.

It's on the shelf here for about $25per 20rnds, makes it only slightly more expensive than the 44 Magnums at 60-65 bucks a box.

I had a galpal back in the 90’s who carried a Bulldog .44. She was a real hoot. Called it, “Sam,” and said don’t anybody need a permit for a gun as long they got blond hair and wear a D-cup. She and my wife were a pair when they got together at the range, too. Women are far and away more competitive than men.
