A Carbine Dilemma

And full auto in a rifle is not very useful under most circumstances even in combat. Notice I said "most". There are a few situations where full auto comes into play, but normally there will be M249 or M240 machine guns available that will put out better suppressive fire than a rifle will.

What if the MG breaks, stops? Full auto backup is useful to have.

I like the Swiss PE90 method of a lockout (push a button to get the safety/selector to the auto setting), or even just the FAL with the quick safe/semi but very long movement to full. Capability without easy use.

Do I understand that the M16A1 has been cut to 16", but maintains the original gas system in the front sight base?
There are some compromises with that arrangement; since there isn't much dwell time in the shortened barrel, past the gas port. The M4 will have the mid length gas system, which was specifically created to solve those problems.
I have the Brownells 16" carbine, with the original gas system; reputedly the gas port has been enlarged to compensate. My carbine has been cranky with anything but a Colt BCG.
Anyway, if serious use is your plan, go with the M4.

I went with the M4. The modified M16 was shortened down to 14.5” and it was a joy to use but I cannot begin to explain how loud the thing was, and the flash was too much. I got more or less same grouping with both from 0-200 but beyond that, even though the M16 was shortened it performed better, down to 320 metres. The M16A1 has a vastly superior iron sight than the M4, but I will be using a LPVO and red dot so it doesn’t really matter

He’s not located in the US. Our laws don’t apply.
I am aware of that. I meant for our situation here in the states.

Though my state doesnt allow civilian full autos at all... As gun loving and red blooded as it is. No sweat off my back. The only need i have for one is if i wanted to cut down a tree real fast. Otherwise it would get used on the Fourth of July and thats probably it.

As a slightly off topic sidebar, has anyone else drooled over the thought playing with a full auto belt fed AR15? Brownells sells the upper for the cost of a nice used truck. However impractical it may be...

You quoted me and I never said anything about the US. The context was Beyrouth in his country. I am fully aware of all US laws. More so than most. I was in the business selling & was class III licensed. So, never meant anything concerning US. Sorry if that’s what you though. :)

And like I said.. Full Autos are boring, and for people who can’t shoot. But if I want one, I know how to machine Lightning Links. So, no problem.
