What part of the shotgun is too much for your dad? is it the recoil or the length and weight? There are options there to cover that.

Knoxx recoil reducing stock which is little over $100. It also has adjustable length of pull. And use an 18" barrel for maneuverability around the home.

The ammo has already been discussed.

Another option is the Taurus Judge which shoots 410 or 45 Long colt. It is easy to carry around the house and not as clumsy as the larger shotgun, but it can inflict some pretty nasty damage. It may be worth having your mother see if she can hold. This would have been my first recommendation if it weren't for this consideration.
If you go with a handgun, you might want to consider security cameras especially for the front door so that each person coming to the door can not only be identified but their face will be recorded for the police should they make it in the home.
And for your mom, you may want to look into the larger containers of OC which will shoot a decent distance, especially if she has arthritis. Even with a shotgun she may have problems getting her fingers to manipulate the safety device on a shotgun or may have poor trigger control.

I think you said something about other security measures. The basics are having a well-lit area around the home, secured doors and windows, peep hole or security camera for the front door, alarm system with a panic button, a garaged vehicle with remote door, cell phone, security company signs around the outside in plain view, windows and side of house clear of bushes and plants and flowers which could provide a hiding spot. There are others as well but since I'm about to crash, I can't think of them at the moment.

Good luck with the choice and hopefully none of it will ever have to be used. You and your family have a lot going for them since they recognize the need and are willing to ask for help and spend the time and money to do it right.

Do us a favor and let us know what the final decision is, I'm curious and I'm sure others will be as well.

Another +1 for the M1 carbine.
As for the 20ga. or .410 shotgun you'll have to consider the fact that even if they can handle one NOW they might not be able to in as little as a few years.
Another (somewhat) lightweight low recoil and easy handling option would be a pistol caliber carbine. The Hi-point is said to be reliable but it is still a Hi-point. The Beretta CX4 is a good one as is the keltec SUB2000 if you can use the sights on it. I'd stay away from the 9mm ARs though since they tend to be finicky. And they're grossly overpriced at the moment.
