Your Favorite Revolver Platform

My favored revolvers are S&W. It’s really tough to pick a favorite frame size. For concealed carry it would have to be the J frame. When it comes to 38 special or 22, it’s hard to beat a K frame. My first , “Gotta get one” revolver was a 686. The L frame is excellent for launching 357 magnums. When I want to impress with my shooting skills, my N frame model 625 is the answer and for all around good looks and great shooting the models 27 and 28 are sure to please

Have different tools, depending upon the need or job.
An M10 is a utility tool; helps keep my house safe, accompanies me on various woodland walks and shooting for the pleasure of doing so.
An M25 in 45 Colt for deer and woods carry.
FA 83 in 41 Mag for serious hunting.
Bisley Vaquero in 357 for busting on edge clay birds and troublesome yard marauders.
Short barrel Birdshead Ruger in 45 Colt in tackle bag.
Also, Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8" barrel in 45 Colt - we call this the cantacumber gun. A few years ago we planted cantaloupe and cucumbers in the garden, perhaps a little too close together. Bees did their job, resulting in the greatest looking small cantaloupe like melons we had ever seen, carefully waited until they seemed ripe, picked a couple - sectioned them with a knife right in the garden- bit into them most retched foul tasting thing - not melon, not cucumber. Immediately lined the whole bunch of Franken cantacumbers up and assassinated them with the 45 Colt RBH.
Plus others, when a particular fancy strikes.
Happy to have a good tool chest, no specific favorite platform.......

Favorite revolver platform depends on the application.

For range and home defense, a K or L frame S&W (with the N frames just barely behind). For carry, a 6 shot 2" Taurus 856UL when I need it to be as small and light as possible, the rest of the time a 3" Colt King Cobra (new model). When I get a Taurus Defender, I'm not sure which will win out... a 3" .357mag with a great trigger, or a 3" .38spl with night sights.

N frame Smith and Wesson, Ruger Blackhawk are my favorite

GP100. It fits. Perfectly. The one seen in my avatar image served as my duty handgun, during, well, adventurous times.

I like the variety that the Dan Wesson designs offer. With one frame you can have a myriad of options.

Smith & Wesson K or L frame. I like the heavy barrel for both .38 shooting in my .357s and for my .22 617. The smaller frame fits my hand better that the larger N frame.

Like many of the rest the k frame is my favorite by far. L N ang J frames are also up there. I don't hane any I or Xframes. Rugers Redhawk are a great gun. Like my Colts to. Have to see about the new Python.

J frame for carry
RedHawk for hunting.
RedHawk for shooting.

I prefer L-and N frame sized revolvers with the nod going to L frames.

I don’t have a lot of revolver “platforms” but I do have two Dan Wesson pistol packs in 357 that enjoy shooting.

Like most of us with XXL hands, N frames are my thing.

No real, single one favorite but I have always found S&W's J, K, and L frame revolvers to be well suited to the task at hand. Likewise I feel much the same way about Ruger's Security, Service, and Speed Six Series. Last but not least an overall abiding affection for the Colt Model P Single Action Army (and just about any Single Action revolver for that matter)!

N frames --- any caliber !

A K frame in .357/.38Spl.

A good all around combo of gun and cartridge. I have a nice example in a heavy barrel model 65 stainless .357.

Accurate, and a pleasure to shoot with its typical crisp S&W trigger.

I think a 4" or 5" N frame is the most beautiful revolver out there, ahead of even the SAA.

I shoot the lowly Ruger Bisley better than anything, though.

So it's a tough call, and probably depends on whether I'm shooting or just looking. On the whole, the gun I'd most like to have in my holster on any given day would be a medium-frame Bisley in .44 Special, worked over by Bowen, tastefully engraved, given a deep polished blue, and gripped in ivory.

a ruger blackhawk because they come up to my eye with the sights already aligned, a 4.625" barrel because it balances so well and 45 long colt (then 357 magnum) because the caliber is so accurate in that gun type.

My 27-2 3.5 inch is my all time favorite. I've shot it so much that it is almost retired.

Lately I've been shooting Italian saa clones.

I'm a Colt man. I carried a Colt M357 my first tour in Viet Nam and killed my first man with it. I also have:

Colt M1849 (cap and ball)
Colt .25 auto
Colt Officer's Model Target (.22 LR)
Colt Detective Special
Colt SAA (.357 Mag)
Colt M357
Colt New Service (.45 Colt)

There have been a number of "platforms" I've loved in the revolver world. Now in my dotage and gradually deteriorating health (thank you God that I can still shoot) I've returned to an earlier love...the Single Action Army Pistol as designed and built by Colt.

My first time around I had a small collection of rebuilt and restored 1st Gen Colt SAAs. I shot them with duplicates of the original black powder loads (that's a handful if you've never experienced it) and loved every minute of it. I can't afford shootable 1st Gen Colts anymore but several years ago I discovered the SAs made by United States Firearms. The fit, finish, feel and balance is perfect in my hand. Here are a few:



I have concentrated (focused) on the models with black powder frames that have the cylinder pin retained by a screw, diagonally through the front of the frame. These and several others only fire black powder duplicates of loads from the 1870s, 1880s, and 1890s. With every boom, cloud of sulfurous smoke, and resounding KLANG when my soft and heavy bullets hit my steel plates I get a smile on my face.

I know this won't be a popular opinion but I shoot my 327 so well even with the high end magnum loads. It's got a great trigger and it spends a lot of time with me since it's so easy to carry. I grown so fond of it I even find it aesthetically pleasing now.
