The Shrew

Wow, interesting to see a knife handle so similar to my one-off made about a decade ago. My inspiration for this little knife came from Folts' 'two finger' knife and from Shivworks' 'Clinch Pick' handle bulb. Blade is 2" long, OAL just over 4", and it fits very firmly in my hand, resisting twisting, performing very well in terms of edge retention with the hardened 01 steel blade ground down to about 1.5mm thick except for the spine. I carried this for several years, but eventually gave up, as there were too many questions coming from the ever-increasingly worried sheep who would ask "Is that for killing people?" I'm a woodworker. Not having a knife with me makes me feel naked. So I switched to a bigger, far more scary folding knife in my pocket, so nobody ever sees it when I'm walking around. Still just a knife I use for common chores, my Ruike is a lovely knife, but I miss my little belt knife. Felt more 'right' somehow. One winter evening I didn't properly push it all the way into the kydex sheath, and lost it while running across a slushy street, not noticing until I was home again. The next day I retraced my path and eventually found it there, frozen solid to the road and obviously driven-over a bunch of times. A quick visit to the buffing wheel and it was happy again. Tough little blade. I'll probably put it onto my hiking pack shoulder strap now, thinking about it. In the forest there aren't any ninnies to pester me about why I have a knife.

WOW that is remarkable! I kinda based this design on a 19th century derringer design, very interesting!

Something in the air. History is full of instances of two or more people who don't know each other coming up with the same design or invention at about the same time. Sometimes a thing is just 'ripe' for the time. Here's mine in one of the kydex sheaths I made for it.

Great blade shape. Also similar to the "Kumar Karda" HI and Fiddleback Forge made, only without the pistol-grip-like angle.
