What would be a good choke for 00 buck and foster slugs? Some say for slugs nothing tighter than imp. cyl., but I don't know.
Wow! That sucks. My friend shot a foster through a full choke and cracked the barrel for about 10 inches down from the muzzle of a beautiful auto 5 browning 16ga.
These stories are around.I say imp cylinder, skeet, cylinder bore, nothing tighter than modified.

Always seem to relate to OLD guns. I sometimes wonder whether these stories aren't really an OBSTRUCTION in the bore. Probably SOME of them are.
You're not gonna crack an un-obstructed Mossberg 500 barrel shooting a Foster slug through a full choke.
You can use whatever choke you want for buckshot or lead slugs.
It won't hurt the gun.
Bore diameter of 12 gauge is 0.729"
Experiment with YOUR gun and see what works best for YOUR application.

I would almost bet that the barrel had a piece of base wad from a previous shot.I say imp cylinder, skeet, cylinder bore, nothing tighter than modified.

Yeah I won't reload and don't recommend anyone reload those paper base shells.I would almost bet that the barrel had a piece of base wad from a previous shot.
I’ve seen several $$$$-$ skeet and trap shotguns damaged or destroyed by the base wad from the shell lodging in the bore. Seems one of the worst offenders is the Federal Champion Paper hull shells that have the traditional spun paper base wad.
It’s one of the reasons Winchester developed the one piece compression hull such as to prevent such from happening.
The typical Foster slug as loaded by the manufactures will slip through the typical full choke. They are made of dead-soft lead. When I was a Hunter Ed instructor, I had a slug pulled down from a Remington 20ga shell and would demonstrate dropping it through the barrel of one of our shotguns. .
Federal’s Powerball slugs use a rubber ball to obturate the skirt to fit the bore when fired. Remington uses a small vent hole to allow gas pressure to accomplish the same thing…
Amen Brother! I used a modified choke mostly, but that's as much because that's what I had as anything else. When I bought a 3" Remington 1100 for deer hunting, you can bet it had a 30" full choke barrel. Never did kill a deer with that gun though. I did miss one once. A little tree jumped between me and the deer and caught that full pattern of 000 buckshot in a pattern that you could have covered with the palm of your hand at ten yards. I never saw the tree. Lost a good shirttail that day.I shot deer with buckshot ahead of hounds for 40 years...........Those open chokes don't cut it period!!!.......We all used full and extra full(turkey choke) for optimum patterns.
