My brother-in-Law just inherited his grandfather’s handgun, and in the holster was a "Gun Toters Permit" It was dated back in the 60's and signed by the Sheriff. He asked me what would that have been for and I was not sure. I could not imagine GA would have required a permit to care a gun back then unless it was to carry concealed maybe? Could someone help me out with this one?

I didn't need any kind of permit to open-carry in Richmond or Columbia counties, GA in 1972. Open carry was common, but not universal. Convenience store clerks and gas station attendants (what's that, Grampa?) usually carried and no one batted an eye.

Edited to add: My memory just told me that I had to have a friend post a property bond for me before I could open carry, so that implies I was on a list somewhere, but I didn't get any card or certificate as I recall. Strange procedure . . . .

Permit

I can recall when you had to have a permit to carry a pistol and you had to have a separate one for each pistol you carried.
They had to be carried openly and could not be concealed!
This was in the 60's and soon Ga. law was changed so as you only had to have one permit for all pistols but still could not be concealed.

Yes he was white. The permit was for this one gun it has the model and SN number. It was kind of neat to see this. So does someone need a permit to open carry in GA today? I did not think you needed one today in GA.

I had one of those, with that precise wording, many years ago when I carried payrolls. But I'll be dogged if I can remember the details- I *think* it was for open carry only.

open carry

If you are hunting or fishing and have landowners permission, you can carry in the open without a permit. Any other times you must have a permit. :cuss:

You can't carry open without a permit here in Georgia. The concealed carry permit is actually the "Georgia Firearms License" and the law makes no distinction between carrying concealed and open with the permit. I just applied for my GFL Thursday at the local courthouse.

toter....

in the 60s( '68 to be exact) i worked in a store, & a guy came in & wanted .41 rimfire ammo. he had a Remington derringer, & we had the ammo!! we asked him about what he was doing w/the gun; & he replied that he had it to show people what the gun actually was, rather than to argue the fact that he wasn't wanting .41 Magnums. we started to ask him about where he was from, carrying concealed, etc. he stated he usually carried the P-35 Browning, but liked this for "evening backup". the permit (he said) allowed him to carry concealed; & it was either the "pistol toter's license" or "pistol toter's permit" i thought it was "permit". but, one thing i am sure of, it was to carry: "any gun" & was so marked. we all marveled over that wording, & i believe the fee was $10!!! most of us carried anyway, & numerous Baltimore City Police & Detectives were in & out of there all the time, & told us, when giving us their calling-cards, that if we ever got "jacked-up" & pulled in, that if we weren't causing a problem to get ourselves arrested, they'd help us out. i really miss that job, hell, it wasn't a job, it was great.....
