Greeting's All-

T'was just wondering if anyone else in the firearms industry was being
tormented by the BATF when an applicant presents a valid ID such as
a state issued DL, military ID, passport, etc that contains an address
that differs from that listed on form 4473. Here in good ole' Birmingham
AL the BATF is really cracking down on FFL dealer's regarding this matter.
Recently, I've had too literally jump thru all kind's of loop holes to make
an honest, valid sale because the applicant's address didn't match up.

And one of these was a distinguished U.S. Army combat veteran just
returning from Iraq by way of Germany. Here is the deal. This active
duty solider had a physical address located in Mobile, AL. His Alabama
DL address was listed as Ft. Rucker, AL. Like I said, he was on leave
just returning from Iraq, by way of Germany; with a set of orders that
place him in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO by the 23rd of May. Low and behold
the BATF didn't particulary believe in this eight year combat veteran,
and had me make copies of all his legal address'es, as well as his orders
placing him at Ft. Leonard Wood.

All this Army veteran wanted to buy was a Taurus Millinenim Pro in .45
ACP in order to protect his family from the constant threat of violence.
The way I see it, we ourselves are our own worst enemy. My client
cleared the F.B.I. NICS check without a problem, so why in the hell
is the BATF so down on our returning troops? I would like to hear a
lot of responses, please as I'm a little ticked off.

BTW, is this happening to other dealer's in other parts of the country?
I support our troops in the fight against terrorism, therefore I think our
young men and women in uniform should be treated with the Golden Rule
Of Dignity.

Address on your form of ID has to be your current address.

Those are the rules.

I've never had a problem with it because if the addresses differ, they don't get a gun.

PMDW, people can have more than one residence. Why the frell does the BATFE want the addresses to match? I would think they'd love getting an alternate address to add to the person's entry in their gun owners ("suspect"?) database. If they want the same address that's on the DL, why don't they get rid of that part of the form and just have the FFL photocopy the DL? Oh, my mistake, that's too easy.

I'm really glad the BATFE and FFLs are so careful about all this stuff. It helps me sleep at night.

Probably because they're afraid of people making up an address and putting it on the form. Thus, the address on your ID and the address on the form must match.

Dan,
The solution would have been just to use the Alabama DL as his ID. His legal residence didn't change while he was overseas, and his official duty station doesn't change until he signs into Ft Leonard Wood on the 23d of May. You are still carried on the books of you old installation until you sign into your new one, even while in transit.

I can see where this could cause problems for a military member who was stationed somewhere that wasn't his official home of record. My son, SGT Mark White is currently at Ft Benning GA. But his HOR is still here in Illinois because Illinois doesn't tax active duty military pay. So his DL is an Illinois license.

I suppose if he wanted to buy a gun in Georgia, he'd have to show his orders assigning him to Ft Benning as proof of residence along with his CAC (common access card, new term for military ID).

Thanks for the great information folk's. My question has always been,
when the applicant had has DL renewed why didn't he just use the
Mobile, AL address as his physical address; instead of Ft. Rucker, AL?
I think that is where the rub came in, according to the BATF. At any
rate, we were able to work around the problem and now the solider
is a happy camper; I'm glad to report.
