Looting: The police are looting. This has been confirmed by several independent sources. Some of the looting might be "legitimate" in as much as that word has any meaning in this context. They have broken into ATMs and safes: confirmed. We have eyewitnesses to this. They have taken dozens of SUVs from dealerships ostensibly for official use. They have also looted gun stores and pawn shops for all the small arms, supposedly to prevent "criminals" from doing so. But who knows their true intentions. We have an inside source in the NOPD who says that command and control is in chaos. He reports that command lapses more than 24 hours between check-ins, and that most of the force are "like deer in the headlights." NOPD already had a reputation for corruption, but I am telling you now that the people we've been talking to say they are not recognizing the NOPD as a legitimate authority anymore, since cops have been seen looting in Walmarts and forcing people out of stores so they could back up SUVs and loot them. Don't shoot the messenger....

I can understand getting ammo and guns, but this, if accurate, is just down right bad.

In the comments section of his last update (4:23pm) was this picture of the police. I'm not sure if the caption will come through but it was taken outside of a WalMart (looks to be a newspaper photo) :cuss: .

Thanks for the link.

Orielly just reported on his show that there have been stories about the police looting as well. From the New Orleans Times-Picayune, information can be found on their site.

It should be noted that the caption to the picture does not state the officers were looting. The items they are carrying could have been confiscated from a looter, picked up off the ground, or any number of other possibilities. They could have been picking up items they found in the parking lot and were returning them to the store.

However, if the reports of the NOPD engaging in actual looting are true, then this is a sad day for law enforcement. I sincerely hope it is a case of misinterpretation of what is actually happening.

+1, I agree with you 100% M Rex, BTW, where did you get your user name?

Good nick name, though it was from a favorite Star Trek Novel character.

Uh, New Orleans was a mess before the Hurricane hit. What else would you expect the situation to be like after it hit. Also, I believe that most of the "good" "decent" citizens of NO are also fairly intelligent. Which means they put two and two together, CAT 5 hurricane, city 20ft below sea level= "Let's get the hell outta Dodge". Sorry to make light of the situation but it isn't like this thing came from nowhere.

Greg L, MSNBC was showing live video of the same cops in your photo at 7PM. They were casually strolling the aisles like it was a normal shopping day. One of them was even pushing a freakin' cart.

I am the only one here professional enough to steal this Glock...

hey, not because the guy had some donuts and dvds to watch on his in-car player does that mean he was looting..

seriously though, I don't believe the stories.....

So, I wonder if the board members here who are eager to waste looters would open up on these rogue LEOs"

I'm not sure who the board members are. If you're referring to moderators...then yes, this is one moderator who believes that looters are looters and that they should shoot one and all.

If I were in command, the police would not be looting for they would know what the orders were: shoot on sight, shoot to kill, if they twitch after falling, shoot them in the head. If they're wearing police uniforms...shoot them twice in the head.

Needless to say, I don't have much use for looters. Whether cops, or the poor, poor folks who are just trying to survive. If they were that interested in surviving then they should have taken advantage of the free transport offered before Katrina arrived.

Thank you, Dasmi, for posting the link. I have been following it since yesterday.
They now have an IRC channel, they need deisel, and are providing shelter for at least one LEO. They also have a link to photos.
I hope they make it through this okay.

From his latest post:

...

It's raining now and I guess that's a relief from the heat. It's hot as hell down there in the sun. Crime is absolutely rampant: rapes, murders, rape-murder combinations.

...

In case anyone in national security is reading this, get the word to President Bush that we need the military in here NOW. The Active Duty Armed Forces. Mr. President, we are losing this city. I don't care what you're hearing on the news. The city is being lost. It is the law of the jungle down here. The command and control structure here is barely functioning. I'm not sure it's anyone's fault -- I'm not sure it could be any other way at this point. We need the kind of logistical support and infrastructure only the Active Duty military can provide. The hospitals are in dire straights. The police barely have any capabilities at this point. The National Guard is doing their best, but the situation is not being contained. I'm here to help in anyway I can, but my capabilities are limited and dropping. Please get the military here to maintain order before this city is lost.

Just finished reading the blog. It's freakin' "Lights Out" down there. Sounds like he's got his little slice of it pretty well under control, though. Hang in there, lads!
