I just purchased my first AK. It's an Armory USA AK. I bought it and five bulgarian 30-rounders at a local gun show. Both the AK and the mags were very reliable at the range with Wolf ammo, the only failure to feed from a 75-round Romanian RPK drum, which I bought strictly for fun.

The receiver seems finely made, and the fit and finish is good. I was planning on getting one of the cheaper imports, but bought this one after I had the chance to see it for myself. I can't speak to it's accuracy, as the rifle is more accurate than I am. I did have a bit of trouble with the standard sight, as I'm used to the the sight on my M1 Garand. It came with a Tapco folding stock and forearm on it, which mounts much better for me than the standard wood stocks. I did however find that the stock was a little bit rough on recoil, and still a little short.

So I'm looking for two things. A replacement rear sight of a peep type. A recoil pad that lengthens the pull about .5" to 1". Any suggestions?

I've attached a picture for those who are interested, though it's an all-black rifle against a white background. One change I intend to make is changing out the handguard with a Romanian wooden pistolgrip forearm and matching wood for the gas tube in that dark finish.

IMO, the best AK sight is the AR-15 type made by Krebs.

Apparently, they are redesigning it, but the one they were selling before looked like the one on this rifle:

I think it would be really cool if the guy at Tech-sights, who made the SKS sight, would make one for the AK, even if it required drilling the receiver.

I'll check into the sights. Thanks for the links.

The suggested recoil pad is for the wood stock though. I was hoping for a slip-on for the Tapco galil-style folding stock. That's a little harder to find. The closest I've found so far is a slip-on for the Fiberforce stocks, and since I've never seen one I have no idea if the dimensions are close enough. Anyone tried to put a recoil pad on one of the Tapco folding stocks?

I had a similar experience with the TAPCO folding stock. It dropped about 18 inches to 2 feet to the ground, landing on the stock, and broke--flying springs and everything. If you still want a nice synthetic stock for your AK, I can assure you they are not all of the same shoddy quality as the TAPCO stock. The ACE stocks are very well made and seem much more durable.

My suggestion is to not spend too much money messing with the TAPCO folder cause it isn't worth it. It is asthetically pleasing if you want to scare sheeple, but it isn't very functional. If you want a functional folder, invest in an ACE. I have a folding 6-position M4 style stock on mine and even for my 6'6" frame it offers more length of pull on its last settings than I can deal with, while also allowing it to be as compact as the orginal stock for use with small frame people or body armor. My brother wanted the tubular Galil folding stock of the original length but ACE offers them in longer and also offers various lengths of recoil pads and spacers for their folding stock mechanism to adjust the length of pull to your specs.

Hmmm. I too found that the recoil was a little stouter than I expected, certainly more than my SKS. I might have to look into another stock. Maybe a wood stock to match the new forearm with a good recoil pad on it. Or one of the CAR -style stocks from ACE.

I liked the Galil because it mounted well and could fold out of the way for storage, but... It's got lousy recoil dampening and I can't imagine shooting it with it folded and hitting anything, might as well take the rounds and chuck them over my shoulder instead. :)

I do want to keep my AK fairly stock in appearance.

You should get one of the Romanian wire folders.

It's what the Romanian military uses as a folding stock and it not only works well, but it is as strong as the rifle itself.

Also, buy yourself about 2000 rounds of ammo, and spend a few straight weekends at the range learning the ins and outs of shooting your Kalashnikov. You'll quickly find out that you have a superb rifle in your hands and as your skill with the rifle develops, you'll be surprised how fast your shots tighten up.

wire stocks- very rugged and surprisingly comfy. My only complaint is my polish wire stock on my tantal does not allow a good cheek weld. If I make another tantal it'll definately be with a wood set.

I guess this is one of those "YMMV" type of deals. I installed a Romy folder on my AK and hated it. I'd rather have a fixed stock than that thing. It was strong and I doubt you'd break one but that's the only good thing I would say about them. Now they are getting harder to find the prices are going up on them to boot.
