You can use any Rem. 700 .308 Winchester. If it has at least a 20" barrel you can keep a 175gr SMK supersonic to 1,000 yards. You don't have to have a heavy barrel. A standard barrel will work just fine. Just don't shoot any faster that 1 shot every 90 seconds. Bed the action and float the barrel. Try 43.5gr of Reloader-15 and a 175gr Sierra MK and the CCI-BR2 primer. A second load to try is 45.5gr of Reloader 15 and a 155gr Lapua Scenar. If you have trouble getting the rifle to group after that. Try Tubbs Final Finish. To shoot to 1,000 yards you would need a 20moa scope base. Do the same stuff to a Savage it will shoot also.

PS Make sure that the crown is not damaged. Wear out the factory barrel and then put a good barrel with money you have saved.
PS #2 In my rifle I use 46.2gr of Reloader 15 with the 155gr Lapua Scenar in a Lapua case. This is 2,920 fps in my rifle. It has a Rock Creek barrel 25" long. It is as fast as I felt was safe in my rifle and still shoot a good group. 5 shots 1.19" at 300 yards. In the last 1,000 yard match I shot in I scored 195 with 10x with this load.

But whatever anyone tells you, trigger time and a 800 dollar gun will do alot more for you than a GAP rock with a USO scope sitting in the safe because you can't go buy a hundred rounds for the range.
Trust me, I've done just as well with my box stock LTR as I've done with the GAP rig, but everyone loves to look at the high buck stick so that's good for the sport long term too, IMHO.

For under $600 you can get a CMP Garand and have it recrowned, but that's an -06. You can also have it rebarreled in .308, but I do not personally know anyone who has the conversion. They do not scope easily, and are a bit heavy to lug around all day hunting, but mine is fine on stand.
If you went with the 700, I would put the heaviest barrel on it you could, as they DO heat up, and it's nice to get five shots off before they start to string from the temperture. As long as the face of the action is properly trued (also for the 700!) most any action of the proper sized bolt face and length would do. The HB Savage is a great option and a great value and would be affordable even bought new.
