Looking for a good rifle/shotgun o/u combo

I've been hankering for a good over/under rifle/shotgun combo here lately. I don't know where to start.

Ideally, I'd like something along .270 over 12ga. But I'm not even sure if there's one of the o/u's made like that.

I can handle .222 over 20ga or something like that as well.

Basically, I want a blued barrel, breakover, combo gun.

I had an M6 Scout that I sold a long time ago that was .22/.410, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I need something with good knockdown power now.

I'd like it to have about a 20" barrel, give or take.

No smaller than 20ga on the shotgun part.

And I'd really like at least a .243 on the rifle barrel.

The main purpose is for those dual hunting days. While it's still legal to take dove and deer on the same days. Every other day of the week belongs to the .30-30.

It sucks to be in the field hunting dove and a 6 or 8 point buck comes out of the brush and all you have is birdshot.

Any suggestions, also, I'd like to keep the price reasonable. I'd really like to stay around 3-400, but I don't know what the going rate is for a good, solid, dual purpose combo.

Edit: It also needs to be capable of putting a sling on it.

in an affordable form, the savage 24 might be your only choice (that i know of anyway). remington also makes a 223 12 gauge, but 223 is iffy for deer. not something i would choose to take with me. maybe tx deer are different from pa deer though

My dad used to use .222 for deer hunting. I'm not sure of the differences in it and .223 though.

I'll check into the 24 after the madness dies down around here. Dadgum bargain seekers are out in force today.

Edit, just looked on gunbroker and the only Savage 24's on there are .22/.410's.

Savage also made a version of the M-24 in .30-30 0ver 12 ga. They're out there, but relatively rare.

Tikka made some fine O/U combo guns as well as double rifles in a variety of CF calibers. Also out there, but rarer and more expensive. IIRC, these were marketed by Savage as well as a couple of smaller outfits.

While I haven't seen them for a while, there were some Russian-made combos, Izmash IIRC, that were available at very reasonable prices not long ago. IMO, your best bet would be to cruise Gun Broker and the like for availability and current pricing.

The options are there, it just might take some searching to hook-up with what you want.

This may be just nitpicking, but if possible, I'd rather have the rifle on top.

i dont think its nitpicking, its why i dont have the remington already. height above bore is very important in a field gun, to me anyway. anyone that has used an m4, or anything else ar based for cqb can tell you that it becomes a challenge to learn your hold unders for extreme close range shooting. that cranial-ocular cavity is just too small

I have a Baikal/Spartan SPR 94 in 12 ga/ .223 Rem. Used, you can sometimes find .30-30 Win / 12 ga or 20 ga Savage FPs with wood stocks. PM me if you want more info.

Yes, Amen, +1. It's a tad silly to have the .223 on bottom. Combine that with my see-through sight and it's sky-high (irons for 12 ga, scope for .223). But it makes sense as a dedicated turkey gun. Turkey at 45 yards or less, smoke it with a 3" magnum 4 shot. Over 45 yards, the bullet will have already risen up to be within an inch or so of point of hold, for turkeys way out there. Due to the sight/bore lines distance, it is far less appealing as a combo deer/quail gun (yep, I flushed some quail last weekend deer hunting) - deer is close and it shoots 4 inches low. 20 yards out still 2 inches or more low - too much to remember.

In that price range you should be able to find a good 20ga/small centerfire. Used Savages crop up everywhere it seems.
