Does anyone know what is the legal way to carry a handgun in a vehicle in the state of Oregon? I've looked on packing.org and am not sure what is legal.

Can a full magazine and additional ammunition be carried in the same bag as the firearm (if the magazine is outside the handgun)? or does the ammunition have to be carried in something away from the handgun?
What does "readily accessible" mean in a vehicle without a trunk?

In short, can I remove the magazine and chambered bullet from my handgun, throw them in a closed clothing bag in the back of a SUV and be ok? I'm thinking that's not "readily accessible" - and it's not loaded and should be ok.

Man...that is ONE broken url.

Don't bother fixin' it, either...it doesn't cover what you want to know.

Actually, you are on the right track*. I would suggest unloading or locking the magazine up, but you got the right idea. If you can't get to it, and its unloaded, then you are good to go!

*I disagree with the policy of the State of Oregon, and am only recommending actions to bring someone into compliance with state laws. Oh, and I ain't an attorney :neener:

Why do we keep getting told to go to the Brady moron site???? Something fishy here .
Haveing lived in OR.for 5 years I would not carry if you dont have an OR. CCW. Being a out of stater you wont get one . Lock it in your trunk.

My experience is that most places in Oregon are pretty common-sense when it comes to guns. I've asked the deputies I work with that exact question to see their interpretation, and they tell me if it's out of reach of the driver it's OK.

Your example of a gun and mags in a bag in the back of an SUV should be fine, that's pretty much how everyone I know carries here.

Put the gun in one bag, the ammo in another. Lock the bag with the gun.

Store it in the rear-most part of the vehicle.

No problems.

This is simple, you got 2 choices. Either put the gun on your dashboard in plain view, or put it in a completely different compartment. If you don't have another compartment unload it, and keep the handgun as far out of your reach as possible. An officer may ask why you have in on the dashboard, just be honest and straightforward with him, no BS. You can also find the rules on the Multnomah County Sheriff's website. They are generally pretty good about being truthful to you(or you can call them and ask).

Wow, what part of Oregon. I drive into the western side all the time. Loaded carry is perfectly legal in Oregon as long as it never leaves the vehicle. Your car, RV, SUV is considered an extension of your house and you are fully legal to have a loaded gun close by you.

My info comes from:

www.state.or.us AG office.

Very true, Id, but there is one slight caveat to the car, PLAIN VIEW. In your house in Oregon you can carry concealed without a license. Private Property you own it, your perogative.
