AWB Expires Now What?

Well if the AWB doesn't get renewed I'll run right out and buy a nice rifle to shoot all those flying pigs.


Seriously though, even if the AWB dies that won't end the ban on importing of Assault style rifles so you can forget about nice new AKs coming in.

Also there are a few states that have their own AWBs that will still be in force even if the federal one dies, so I think you'll see gun makers selling both what we now call "Pre Ban" type rifles along with "Post Ban" PC rifles for the serfs in those states.


I would like to see what some are planning for renewal of the AWB ... do they just vote to continue what we have? or do they have to come up with a new law? If so, I wonder if it will be better or worse then what we have now.

Honestly I could see a compromise bill that continues the restrictions on rifles but drops the mag capacity limit for handguns.

Nothing happens here in Kali. We're still screwed. They've enacted laws here that already ban AWs and magazines over 10rnds. Maybe we can get the 3rd Infantry Division to swing by Kali on the way home and give us a regime change. Then maybe we can be free like most everyone else.

Sad. Sad but probably true. Gone are the days of cheap, easy to buy AKs, ARs, FALs, magazines for those and more.

But I feel a lot safer...after all, those laws were passed to protect us all (wink).

If I am not mistaken, the law dies. If they want it back, they have to write a new one from scratch.

I hope that all recent events that seem to have made more people support RKBA will help common sense prevail and if a new one is created, it is less restrictive. Yeah, that's it. I am sure it will happen.

I think that if the AWB does sunset, there will be some of the smaller manufacturers that will return to the original configurations of the military style rifles. I doubt that Colt will. I could be wrong, hope so.

But the biggest immediate benifit to us shooters will be the end of restrictions to what we can do to our own guns.
I'm sure there will be a lot of post-ban guns retrofitted to the original configuration.

I just might have to trick out my AR clone, and make a M4gery out of it. At the very least, I want a flash hider on my barrel, which is currently bare. At 16", the noise is too much.

My hope is that prices come down a bit, when manufacturers don't have to keep making 2 versions of their products. (Bushmaster, are you listening?)

Flash hiders don't cut the noise. They just keep you from flinching at the flash.

If something cuts the noise, even only 1dB, it is considered a suppressor.

American collapsable stocks, bayonet lugs, threaded barrel ends, flash supressors and 30 round magazines for everyone!

Imports are still restricted but once the get the American part count up, they are US manufactured and can have the whole host of "evil" features too!

If nothing were put in its place I would say a lot of folks are going to buy folding stocks, mags, bayonet lugs, and other stuff for their post bans, heck I would buy some of the stuff and stick it in a closet.

Somehow I can't even think about what all I would want to do if the ban left.

All I know is everything I would buy would be for the next time a stupid ban gets passed.

OF course I can't see something replacing it, even if we get mags back I suspect there will be other problems to deal with.

Many of these companies already make law enforcement only models with all the restricted features; they'd just start selling those to the general public.

If it does die and nothing replaces it, don't get complacent. Fight, fight, fight for the removal of all these unconstitutional, ineffective laws.

What happens if the law "sunsets" in 2004? I'm going shopping!

I will run, not walk, and buy the Butler Creek folding stock for my mini-14 that I've been denied for ten #@^%@! years, possibly followed by an Eagle combo flash suppressor/front sight.

All my post-ban semi-auto rifles will get flash-hiders, just because. I've never shot them at night, but hey, do I need an excuse? One of my ARs will get a collapsible stock. The main thing I'll probably buy will be magazines that would be fun to have, but cost too much right now. IE, a Beta-mag or two for the ARs, some 33 round G18 mags for the Glocks, and a drum mag or two for the Uzi.

At that point, you go to work canning the next piece of Federal gun control bullocks, the import ban, I believe, then go to work on the next, etc.

Never stop taking ground, never be content and stop fighting. The forces against gun owners have the help of govt to back them, which means if we're not gaining ground, we're losing it by default.

oh, there'll still be a high end market for "pre-93" weapons, but once the ban is gone I'd expect the prices on the others to drop significantly...also expect to see a lot of competition for production of high cap mags - especially the primo ones that are currently running big bucks.

Don't get your hopes up yet. Our president has already made comments that he would sign a new AW ban that came his way. That being said, we might not be able to stop one of these things from going through the House and Senate. And the bad thing is nothing that happens nationally does me a bit of good over here in occupied territory. I too think that we need to bring our troops back and defend Nevada. Then when we get enough evidence that Davis is holding onto weapons of mass destructions (aka he controls the budget), the 3rd infantry division can roll in through the 10, take LA, and then head north up I-5 and free the rest of the state eventually stopping in Sacremento or San Fransisco! Despite all of the Foreign Information Ministers in the big cities talking trash, you will see all of the oppressed Californians cheering them along the way in the small oppressed enclaves of this oil and produce rich country. Hey I can dream right?

Prices on new guns won't come down, as they will be making multiple configurations of pre and post ban rifles, anyway. Even if there is no restriction on the type of features available, manufacturers make multiple configurations anyway; rifle, carbine, flattop, iron sights, flash suppressors, brakes, etc.

You will see the prices drop significantly on old preban guns in the used market. If it sunsets, they'll just be 15 year old rifles, not anything particularly desireable.

I agree with TechBrute, the prices on complete new rifles won't drop much, however the prices on what are now "preban" aftermarket parts will drop significantly. Stuff like colapsable stocks and conversion kits for post ban PC rifles with thumbhole stocks will be real hot sellers.

I also think we'll see a drop in the price of full capacity magazines.

What happens if the AWB sunsets?

As someone pointed out, we'll still have the annoying stupid "US Parts Count" crap on imported rifles, but now we'll have all the good stuff on them.

I doubt we'll see too many of the "post-ban" style weapons anymore, because in the states that ban AWs, they (I believe) ban the post ban versions too. At least in Kali they do which is a big market, there is no benefit to keeping a Postban in your lineup since you can't even sell them there either...

IF the AWB sunsets:

1) I'll vote for GWB (again) and a bunch of Republicans. Y'all can get what happens if not.

2) My AR gets a flash suppressor and possibly a folding stock

3) I get lots of brand-spanking-new 20- 30- and 40-round mags for the AR. Maybe even one of those 250-rounders that the Army uses on the Minimi (just for the fun of scaring the antis).

4) The debate in my mind between the M1A and the FN-FAL will be over, in favor of the former (it is a debate because of the current cost of standard capacity mags). I'll probably get at least 10 20-round mags before I get the rifle, merely out of habit.

5) We can all begin to militate with our Congresscritters for national carry legislation (i.e. treat them like drivers' licenses, with NO additional record-keeping or bureaucracy), a repeal of the Brady Law, repeal of the '86 ban on new machine gun manufacturing, repeal of the '68 GCA and repeal of the '34 NFA. I personally won't be satisfied until I can buy what my grandfather could have (but, alas, didn't), and for similar (inflation-adjusted) prices and with the same lack of hassle. Until then, we ain't free.

If it sunsets, a lot of people are gonna be real upset with their $1,000 bayonet lugs and their $1,000 flash hiders on their used to be $2,700 rifles. You know the ones that the guns are , were and always will be worth $700, but they paid $2,700 to get those PRE-BAN features.

Im going to be honest here. We are losing.

So long as armed americans continue to work within the system, we will continue to lose our guns by the abuse of law. The system, both Democrats and republicans, do not represent or defend what we gunowners consider the most important freedom we enjoy as americans. Disarmament is the ultimate goal by our government. Period.

With this in mind, as much as we fear to admit it, the only way we will be able to defend our rights in the end will be to kill and die for the cause. It will come to that. Organized movements to individual acts to stop specific lawmakers permanently, the bottom line will be bloodshed. Anyone who thinks otherwise is, in the end, whenever it comes, is in for a horrific experience. Which I am sure many will surrender to rather than die.

But I could not disagree with you more. Because I believe that the Second Amendment is about killing tyrants. Kings gave orders. Politicians pass laws and I look at my bill of rights to tell the time. We are losing. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but unless we experience a few more 9/11's, the socialist powers, backed by world governments will prevail here, so long as we "work within the system". My 2.5 cents.
