While you guys may ooh and aww over a woman who is confident in themselves and just so happens carries a weapon they are not the ones you bring home to mom. You bring home women like your mom.

To be fair, that's only because those confident women decline the oos and awws...

:p

The kind of girls we bring home to meet Mom.

I'd venture to say that for a large part of the population, Dragongoddess has a point. Idealized characteristics are just that, idealized. Not actually desired in women in the real world. How often do we hear "dial 911" instead of "dial 911 and deal with the threat until the cops show"? Or all the threads about "what guns for my wife/gf/sister" because we all know total strangers on the net know more about what will fit their girly hands than they do. Right, guys?

I'd like to think of myself in the smaller segment of the population that actually values those things in a woman, namely that wife o' mine I mention periodically. I think the woman in the story here did well. She was not well equipped, but did with what she had and both she and her child are alright. Messy story, happy ending. It would be better if she got some support, some training, and a better means to protect herself and her child.

Moro warriors (who used drugs in battle as did our bad guy in this story) found multiple hits from their .38 revolvers to be ineffective, thus they adopted the .45acp. Bottom line if you dont plan to use a serious caliber dont bother. Learn to deal with the recoil from a .45, 357, 44mag, etc. You only have one life to protect dont chance it to inferior calibers.

Oh goodie, it's time for another caliber war.:neener:

leaving a firearm on the nightstand, She would have woke up to find her attacker armed with her weapon
A gun in a safe is USELESS when you need it.

Maybe a gun at the bedside should be concealed, like in a drawer, under a rag, or in a cheap-looking box. Or better yet, have a holster attached to far side of your bed, as long as that side is against a wall.

Owning a gun doesn't make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician.

Someone inexpertly and flinchingly and hestitantly using one pretty much is just giving a free weapon to the bad guy. Need the training, too.

You can buy a finger keypad lockbox for less than $100 and bolt it under to the floor under your bed or where ever you like. With pratice it takes less than a second to open and pull your weapon. It's easier than digging in your nightstand drawer for your gun, and better then leaving a loaded gun out for the small child to find.

Wasn't the old .38 standard used in the Philippines, and the .38 special round was developed AFTER the Spanish American War?

I keep a Glock 21 in a paddle holster screwed to the bottom of my nightstand. You cant see it unless you look up under the table but it is easy to grab when lying down.

Sure, but once you marry them, you sure want to keep them safe.

Women are more easily victimized because their attackers are almost always bigger and stronger than they are.
So sure, mindset is important, but it seems to me that any man in a women's life would want her to be both prepared and capable of defending herself when home alone (or anywhere else as well).

Even women who normally have an aversion to guns will easily come around to accepting them when they understand that there is simply no better "tool" available to them to defend themselves from instantaneous harm.
I wonder if there has ever been a female victim of rape and violence that thought to herself after the incident: "Boy, I sure am glad I DIDN'T have a gun when that happened because I might have hurt the guy".

Well, whatever that Washington County cop was shooting sure stopped his jacked up ass pretty quick. ;)

The woman awoke to find him standing by her bed.

That's a little close for comfort. I'd say she'd be better off investing in a good alarm system, like this one:

Yes it was. And they didn't have hollowpoints back then either. Keep in mind the most powerful handgun in the world is useless if you can't hit anything with it.

Even a .25 is better then nothing at all.

Any dog that will bark someone entering the house will do. And pitbulls are overrated as guarddogs or so I've heard.

Interesting twist on this thread

Owning a gun doesn't make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician.

Someone inexpertly and flinchingly and hestitantly using one pretty much is just giving a free weapon to the bad guy. Need the training, too.

She didn't give him the cell phone, it's more difficult to operate than a snubbie. If she can dial a phone, she can point, squeeze and BOOM!

I agree that she should spend some time at a range with any fellow gunny in the future, but to think she could not have operated a firearm while in fear of her life is just a big, big stretch for me. When someone is in your home threatening your life, I don't think the flinchies are going to be an issue.

Anyone here recall the recoil of your rifle when your shooting that buck, elk, bear....Not many do, most don't even realize it, the adrenaline sees to that.

I'll definitely agree that she should be getting a dog. I had a 75lb german shepherd mix that thwarted two home invaders that I personally witnessed in her tenure as security. One tried to enter through a screened window on one of those 90 degree nights. He did not return. The other time she chased the perp down and they worked it out. Again, he did not return. Dogs are very effective and much like a lock to an honest man, it keeps him honest. Also, if a perp is that brash, the dog will bring entry to your attention long before said perp is in your face while you're drooling on your pillow at night.
