I have a 5.5" stainless in .44 magnum.
Its a beautiful gun with excellent ergonomics when used as a "family car". What I mean is that it is a great shooter at normal loads: .44 specials up to low to moderate powered .44 magnums. However, I find that when used as a "race car" the recoil is brutal... the big bear loads tear my hands apart. The grip shape for my hands does not work well for nuclear level .44 magnum loads.
And no, I'm NOT sensitive to .44 magnum recoil. I can fire the nuclear bear loads in my Ruger Bisley Hunter with no problems--that grip shape to me does a good job of making a painful load manageable.
I use my Redhawk with mostly .44 specials.
I will fire normal .44 magnums out of it, but I go to the Bisley Hunter when I want to fire the hottest .44 magnum loads. I consider my Redhawk to be a great home defense revolver when loaded with .44 Specials. I'd like to pick up a 4" Redhawk as a home defense revolver one day, using exclusively .44 specials in it. That would reduce over penetration (when compared to .44 magnum loads).
