The K Frame

Nothing wrong with a 3 screw, and the price is still fair. The market on K frames is escalating, so it's well worth the money. Hang on to it and enjoy shooting it.

Mine will be a carry gun, as soon as I can afford some good leather, another speedloader, and a leather speedloader rig. This is what it did today.

That's a SIX shot group. I had to measure the 2 shot hole on the right before I would believe it. I claim nothing for me - this is one incredibly accurate revolver.

Model 19-3

I just purchased a nickel Model 19-3 4 inch that is P&R for $340.00. It was a hard choice as the store had a blue 19-4 RR/WO for $299, another 4 inch 19-3 nickel for $400(no turn line or any signs of use) and a 6 inch nickel 1-3 for $440. It was a hard choice but I wanted something I can shoot and I would find it hard to fire an unfired gun that could be collectible. If anyone is interested, PM me and I will give you the store location:D

Whitewolf, enjoy your newest K frame, and thank you for offering to share the gunshop location with us.

Stoney, you've some beautiful M&Ps.

ArmoredMan that it is some truly impressive shooting, even with a little help from the gun. The DeSantis Speed Scabbard I've been toting my 3" 65 in has really impressed me, and the price on them is quite reasonable - worth taking a good look at for your new piece.

I'm going camping this week.

As of now,
the 65 is on lay away.

That [strike]may[/strike] will change
between now and camp set up ...

Over the years I've owned more 19s and 66s than any other firearm. I'm going through something of a "revolver renaissance" lately and am carrying my 4-inch 19-5 all the time. I'm seriously pondering a second 4-inch 19 or a 66...there are some fairly interesting offerings over at gunbroker.com these days.

I do want to finally get a set of Roper-style grips for my 19...I've noticed that Top Gun Supply is carrying the Ahrends grip line for about $60 a pop...sounds pretty good to me.

FOUND LEATHER!

smith10-8mastersholster.jpg

Now I need a plain leather double speedloader pouch...and everyone seems to be plain out of them. Got a cheap UM nylon for now, all stoked with Winchester 158gr +P LSWCHP.

I'll do my part to keep the thread alive. Here's the latest fix for my Heavy Barrel addiction, a Model 10-6. It's a retired NYPD gun and by the looks of it saw a lot of action on the street. The serial number dates it to 1971. It has the sweetest trigger of any gun I own, can't wait to take it to the range.

My Model 13 isn't so lonely anymore, but I think they both need their stainless steel twins now. Does this ever end?

Range Report 19-3

Finally got a chance to shoot my new baby today. I put through 100 125 gr +p 38s and 50 158gr 357s through it at my private range. I was using 8" diameter paper plates duct taped to an old door. Double action the first 6 went 5 of 6 on the plate with about 5" groups at 21 feet. The more I shot, the tighter the groups got until it was 6 out of 6 and 3 to 4 inch groups.

The 357s were a real joy. The previous owner must have had it sighted for them as those guoups were in the 2 to 3 inch area. I had put a large black dot in the center of the plate with a cross on top. The first shot hit exactly in the center of the dot. The next five all clustered very close around that. I was totally amazed.

My son ion law was quite impressed and commented that he did not know that I could shoot that well. Then he tried and got similar results. We were both very impressed and also suprised as to how little the recoil was from the 357s. This gun is definitely a keeper.

Once, I can wrestle the camera away from my daughter, I will post some pictures.

Can anyone recommend a different grip ? The target grips have such a large bell at the bottom that my little finger has no gripping force at all. I would like somethinf that is more rounded at the bottom as to conceal better. I am not sure if I would want wood or rubber. :D:D

I didn't have enough money
to get it out of hock before last week's camp.

But I did put down another $70 today.
That makes it more than 50% mine.

Should have it home within 2 weeks
(especially if my ebay item sells this week ...)

While putting down the $70 today,
I shot 4 photos of the 65 at the shop.
Desktop images so I can begin to visualize
restoration, care, feeding and shooting.

Note about the background: my camp bandanna.

Please note the large scratch
just below the cylinder on the right side.
Not too deep, but definitely noticeable.
Recommendations? Buff it out?

I see a set of Hogue Monogrips on it.

Can't wait to get it home.

Must ... be ... patient ...

Very nice Nem. The grips currently on the gun are Uncle Mike's Combat Grips. I don't know what to tell you to do about the scratch. In the mean time I'll hope for you that your Ebay item sells and you get your 65 home soon.

Thanks, Uga. :)

Those Unc' Mikes weren't bad for their day,
but I think Hogue has moved beyond them.

I'm confident that we'll develop
a plan to deal with "the scratch".

If all else fails,
I'll bet I know
a smith that
can restore it.

Report & a couple of questions

OK, got the new (to me) 65 home last night.

Cleaned it up - well, actually still cleaning.
Who ever owned it last - reportedly a prison guard - did a poor job of keeping it clean after shooting .38 in it. The cylinder bores were filthy! :fire: Still trying to get all the crud out. (Nearly wore out my brush doing it ...)

Everything in the barrel and cylinder looks good though. No pitting.

Put on a new set of Hogue Monogrips.

Haven't shot it yet, but already, I LOVE this gun.
It feels very good. Excellent balance - liking it better already than the 4" 686 that I sold. Not that it wasn't a fine revolver, but was just a bit too heavy and long for me. This 65 is just about perfect.

I've got a Galco high ride OWB holster that I bought for the 686+. (Will sell it soon.) It's too long and large for this 6-shooter, but still fits. I carried the 65 in it around the studio last night. Very comfortable. Surprisingly so. Didn't feel weighted down. Heavier than my 642, for sure, but still not as bad as I'd thought it would be.

I'll buy a high ride OWB for it asap, but also hoping to find a "drop holster", like a tactical leg holster but preferably leather, that sits below the belt line. (Needs to fit below a backpack waist belt for camp use.) If anyone knows of such a holster for this 3", please let me know.

So, two questions:

1) Any recommendations for getting that last little bit of crud out of the cylinder bores that's sort of hard to get at where the cylinder bore diameter decreases? I'm guessing just more brushing, but ...

2) Please take a look at the first image below taken from straight above. (I'm still working on lighting for stainless steel, and may have to get the 35 mm film camera out soon.) Notice that the Hogues do not cover the back strap. That's OK, but the back strap is not flush with the grips on the back, but instead sticks up about 1/16" or a bit more above the back of the grip.

Is that normal? Shouldn't the strap be flush with the grips?

I may have to go with a set of Hogue's that convert the round butt to a square butt. The back of it is only partially open.

But really this one fits my hand better (at least as judged by just holding the grips themselves. Haven't put the other one on.

Any advice?

Thnx.

Nema,
Congrats on your purchase. The Hogue grip should sit flush with the backstrap. It appears to not be going onto the gun enough. Check to make sure nothing is blocking it from going further. The grip should sluip into place with the screw just holding it there.
