If you own both, could you please compare what you like and dislike about one compared to the other. Most interested in the following points:

1) Ergonomics
2) Reliability (not long term at this point, but just FTFs, FTEs, etc)
3) Ease of take-down / reassembly
4) Fit and finish
5) Accuracy
6) Which one do you shoot most? (often more telling than anything else)

I just purchased the M&P full-size in 9mm and was considering the PX4 as well but would like to hear how they compare from someone who owns both.

Thanks.

chirp, chirp.... :D
I don't own either, but I've shot the PX4, and will be shooting the M&P in 9mm soon. I will post my impressions of them both after that if you want.

Jason G: I would really appreciate it!

tydephan: That just puts you in the same boat as me!

I love the M&P for a number of reasons but I've got to say that I like the looks of the PX4 and the availability of a conventional double action trigger.

Might be time to trade in my Sig for a new toy--the M&P's not going anywhere!

If you plan on being in the Pensacola area let me know and I'll take you out to shoot the PX4 (along with a few others).

They are really completely different animals aside from being Polymer.

1) Ergonomics
Equal. Both have changeable back straps. The S&W is a little more "grippy" but not enough to rate it higher.
2) Reliability (not long term at this point, but just FTFs, FTEs, etc)
Both = 100% so - Equal
3) Ease of take-down / reassembly
Easy on both. The rotary barrel may need a little more attention but not enough to sway it one way or another so - Equal
4) Fit and finish
Equal
5) Accuracy
I'm more accurate with my M&P but I also shoot striker fired pistols more. If I do my part the Beretta is equal.
6) Which one do you shoot most? (often more telling than anything else)
My XD's... :neener:
Really though, I shoot the M&P more than the PX4 but not for any specific reason. My M&P is a compact and I carry it quite a bit so I spend more time on the range with it. I bought the PX4 and a CX4 for shooting 3-gun matches primarily and because I like Beretta's..

Since I've been competing more heavily I'm really starting to buy in to the idea of familiarity, so switching from my XD's to a sa/da really screws me up. The M&P screws me up but not nearly as bad.

I've been avoiding this one. I'm ashamed to say that, although I have both, I've shot neither. :what: I've not been able to get out to the range that much. I will say the M&P feels better. I prefer the takedown of the PX4 to the Sig-like takedown lever on the M&P.

All I have is the PX4, and absolutely love it. I'd like to get my hands on an M&P just to see what they are all about.
Here's my thoughts on my PX4 F model 9mm
1. It's the most comfortable 9mm "I" have shot---not saying much. With the mid size backstrap, everything is easy to control without changing my grip.
2. As of a few hours ago I only have about 1500 various types and flavors of ammunition through it. Never a single malfunction or abnormality. Haven't shot any reloads yet if that matters for you.
3. Very easy to dis-assemble, clean, and re-assemble. The piece"central block" over the guide rod which helps rotate the barrel might throw you for a loop the first time you take it apart, but it's no real issue.
4. Fit and finish is flawless on mine.
5. I'm not the best pistol shooter around. Sometimes I think I could do better with a rock. The PX4 seems to be very forgiving of new shooters I've brought with me, or folks with bad habits. It groups well for me at 7-25 yards. It's more accurate for me than my Glock 17 and Radom.:) The sight picture requires the front sight to be ON your intended target. A "6 O Clock hold" will probably hit low for you.
6. Of the 5 pistols I have--XD45, Ruger SP101, Glock17, Radom(not really a shooter), and the PX4---The PX4 is the only pistol I've brought to the range in the last 3 trips.

Like I said earlier--I love my PX4.
I won't give up my PX4, but if I were you, I'd enjoy that M&P for a minute or 2 before adding to your collection.

cpirtle: Thank you very much. That's exactly what I was looking for. Sounds like, although significantly different, you rate both of them quite highly in all of the categories that interested me.

I see you shoot your XD the most. I actually have a XD9 sub-compact as well but have decided to part with it. I really prefer the M&P and my wife just plain can't shoot the XD--jams it every few shots (her fault, not the gun's)! I prefer guns we can both enjoy.

SouthpawShootr: NEVER SHOT EITHER! You must immediate relinquish your guns to people who will make the effort to get to the range. I would suggest myself as the PX4 recipient :D.

Seriously, I'd love to hear your opinions once you make it to the range.

FDC: Glad to hear that you like your PX4 so much. I'm in the process of selling a few pistols and I'm not very good at doing that without buying another one. I'm actually thinking about the M&P 45 and the PX4.

You're probably right in that I should just enjoy what I have for a while and go from there.
