Hi,

I just bought a Remington LTR in .308. I am getting it for 3 gun competition, and target shooting. I don't know much about scopes at all, and have a budget of about $400.00 for the scope. I am looking at Leopould scopes, but wanted to hear what people on this forum thought.

Also, I don't handload and don't have any intention of starting, and I wanted to know what factory ammo I should buy. When I bought the rifle, I picked up 100 rounds of Winchester 147 grain FMJ .308. Is that the best for this gun and what I want to do?

Opinions, and facts, please.

Thanks

Hi. There is no one brand that all rifles will shoot well. If you don't intend to reload, you'll have to try as many brands of ammo as you can to find the ammo your rifle will shoot best. It might shoot the Winchester 147 grain FMJ well or it might not. 147 grain FMJ's are NATO standard, but that doesn't mean your rifle will shoot them well.
The .308 loves 165 grain hunting bullets and 168 grain match bullets. Federal loads match grade ammo, but cheap it ain't.
"...don't have any intention of starting..." You will if you intend shooting competitions much. Factory ammo is ok, but it gets expensive quickly and it's generic. The best ammo is that which is tailored for your rifle.
"...Leopold scopes..." High quality, reliable stuff, but not the only game in town. Remember to budget for the bases, rings and installation too. $400 might be a bit light. It's not completely impossible though. Scopes and mounts are on sale regularly, but you'll have to shop around. Have a look at Cabela's, etc. and in your local gun shop. You might get a deal in your local shop that includes installation.

During your 3-gun or target shooting, what kind of accuracy do you need? I'm sure the plain old Fed AE load will pretty accurate out of that LTR. Good practical accuracy. It won't be Wolf, that's for sure. If it is accurate enough to hit the targets you need to hit, why waste money buying something more premium? If you need a better load, that has a high degree of probability for being accurate in just about anything, the Federal Gold Medal Match 168gr is the load. It's pricey though.

Leupold scopes are good. I like them. Here's the deal with them: Something you will universally hear about Leupold is that you can get X brand of scope that has Y feature just as good as Leupold but for 30% less money. That IS true. When it comes to glass, there are others that are just as good for less money. However, Leupold has the industries best reputation for customer service. It is safe to say that Leupold is factoring in the price of repair/replacement into their scopes. Glass isn't better, it isn't tougher, it isn't prettier dollar for dollar. But, you'll get it fixed regardless of if you're the first owner or not - for your entire lifetime with absolutely no questions asked and no hassle. And, in a timely manner too. That's what you're paying more for.

I would get a good scope. Are you shooting 100 to 300 yds?? Or 500 to 800 yds.PLUS..The scope makes a difference, who puts it on and did they put it on correctly, exactly straight?.The Leupold 6.5 x20x50 long range mil dot is great!!!!Wind adjustment etc.It will farther than mentioned! Proper base and rings are important for max.adjustment.More than 400.00 but could be worth the wait...The mark IV in the same is also good.I have the first one.
I would advise you to contact natchezz shooting supplier out of Tennesse. You can google search them and best to call their 800 number and talk to someone. They do have good deals. That is where mine came from. They will often deal a little too!
The ammo is different in some guns.It is something you must try.I like GEORGIA ARMS AMMO.It is the Precision plus balistic tip I use in 300 win mag. 180 grain.Just a fact it works in my Rifle FANTASTIC.It is all I will use!!!
In the 308 I would get a couple boxes of this and try also the BLACK HILLS ammo in the RED box,we use the 168 grain,WORKS!I use alot of the GEORGIA ARMS...44 Mag DEER STOPPER will WORK! They have other I use too!
I must say the scope QUALITY the proper mounting and most of all properly cleaning your gun and barrell BEFORE SHOOTING and after.Proper breaking in the barrell is also VERY important.I was tought alot several years back.I shot once cleaned barrell did this about 30 times and then shoot twice then clean up to about 12 times.Doing everything the correct way pays off in the long run.Oh!!get you a Dewy rod for cleaning just NOT a aluminum rod or anything aluminum.
This all maybe to technical for what your looking for BUT it works, long distance!

thanks

thanks to all of you that replied. I've heard that about the Leopould scopes and their customer service, and I will probably go for one of their scopes. The range I'm looking at is 20 - 200 yards for the 3 gun matches and the target shooting is 100 - 200 yards.

I have bought .223 55 grain from Georgia Arms and was very pleased with it. I'll check out Natchez.

Thanks again.

type of scope depends on distance, shooting targets? or hunting? I like to stick with Bushnell, Leopold, Nikon, except for my EOTech and the Aimpoint or Trijacon I'll get. As far as mgnification I have everything from the EOTech with no magnification to a 6-24x40 for longer shots out to 600-800 yards.

Don't be cheap with a scope.

I also shoot Winchester 147 grain FMJBT ammo and like it. Ballistics say the zero for the round is 200 yards. That means you'll be 1.5" high @ 100 yards. and right on @ 50 yards.

I also like shooting Federal 150 & 165 grain Vital shok for hunting and Remington 150 grain for target.

Hey man,
I would go Leupold... their lifetime no questions warranty has helped me out :) Also the gun shop down the road from me has a used 4.5-14x 50mm Vari-xIII for $399!!!! Give them a ring! www.ammo4guns.com
