I have an M1 chambered in .308 that I want to scope but don't know who has the best mount. I don't want a scout type mount. Who makes the best mount and where is the best place to get one? I am open to any suggestions.

TIA,

AmegaRanges makes an excellent forward mount for an M1. It replaced the top handguard (no permanent modifications needed), and allows you to mount a long eye relief scope where it won't interfere with clip loading or case ejection.

Griffin & Howe makes a mount for the M1 although it requires modifying the receiver. This was the mount used on the M1C sniper rifle.

The S&K mount replaces the rear sight. Simply take out the knobs, cover, aperature, etc and put in the S&K. Sometimes it is an interference fit (tap it in) and adjust the set screws. The iron sight they say is useable with the scope is not really usable. It is elevation only and the aperature is way too big. The scope mount does work though. It a no gunsmith, no receiver taping solution. The picture ec-10 provided is accurate.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions guys. I am really leaning toward the S&K mount. It looks like a pretty stable base plus it doesn't require modifying the receiver and is reversable. Does anyone know who currently has the best deal on the S&K mount? Thanks again.

I'd think ordering it direct from S&K would be the way to go. I've only dealt with them once, on a scout mount for my m/96, but they were helpful with questions and then very quick with shipping once I'd faxed in my order.

I have the B Square mount on my Garand. I have had it on there for several years and it has held up well. Very sturdy mount but it does take some getting used to shooting since it has to off set so far.

Don't. M-1's were never intended to have a scope. M-1C's and D's notwithstanding. Scoping one will bugger the balance.

???

Mine is a 1 MOA or less shooter at 100 yards wth the scope. Putting that little scope on that monster rifle isn't going to unbalance anything.
