My 10 year old wants to start shooting. He know all the safety rules and shoots .177 airguns now pretty well. He's a little guy, and I'm looking for a small .22 rifle for him. Any advice on something reasonably accurate and light as hell?

Henry minibolt.

Bolt means they can't go nuts, either accidently, or mechanically. Easy to use, light, highly visible sights.

I didn't get the lever because of all the extra manipulation required, just seemed more dangerous for a first gun for a kid, with all that handling.

We just mounted up a red-dot on it, but haven't tried to sight it in yet.

Rossi offers a break action .22LR and .410 combo (two barrels) that comes with a soft side gun rug to boot.

~$219 IIRC, my brother bought his son one a year or two ago, nice package. The break action is nice because you can teach safety and see if the breech is open or closed very quickly when moving through the fields pursuing wabbits and squeaks. It's how I plan to train my son (due Dec 1) for his first exposure to firearms. After the BB gun of course.

Savage Cub. Small, light, and well-made. Frankly, While the stock is definitely too short for my comfort, I wouldn't hesitate to hit the field for small game with a Cub, myself.

... mossberg plinkster 22. smallest of the adult size stocks, and is synthetic, weight is less than 4.5 lbs.

According to Mossberg's website, they make a "bantam" model, too that has an even shorter LOP (12-1/4" vs. standard)

I've handled a copy of the mini-bolts, and was most pleased by the predecessor of the Marlin Cub (Marlin 15Y, I believe).

I've heard some mixed things about the Cricket (bolt must be manually cocked after closing, which takes more muscle than many kids have), don't know too much about the Henry.

However, the CZ has an outstanding rep, and El Tejon knows a lot about taking kids shooting, so I'd take a hard look at the links he posted.

I like the CZ Scout. Youth stock, good open sights (Kids should learn on plain open blade sights, they don't need fiber optics IMO), single shot adapter or standard CZ mags.

I had a 4X on mine to test ammo and everything shot well. Mine really likes Velocitors and Mini Mags, shooting about a half inch at 50 yards with the scope.

By the way, I bought my scout for myself as my Kayak gun. I'm 6' and have no trouble with the shorter length of pull. With the Velocitors I have pretty good punch in a tiny package with excellent practical accuracy.

-1 for the Criket

I also will NOT recommend the Cricket to anybody, once the "plunger / hammer" is cocked with a live round in the chamber, the only way it can be uncocked is to hold on to the "hammer / plunger", pull the trigger and gently release the spring tension, for a "kids" rifle, this seems to be extremely dangerous...

CZ Scout all the way! Dovetailed for scope, and has irons. Accurate like the big CZs, but fits a little guy fantastically. My 7 year old absolutely treasures his scout!

Rossi makes the triple threat which you can swap barrels for a .22 .410 and a .243. Its break action so you can only load one at a time and its a blast to shoot cause it ejects everytime you break the top. The quality probably isnt as good as a remington or marlin but its still fun.

If you buy him a Browning lever action .22 and put a 4x scope on it you will have the happiest 10-yr-old on earth . . .

and . . .

someday he will pass that Browning .22 on to your first grandson.

Savage Cub. Why?

1. Single shot bolt action.
2. Small, light.
3. AccuTrigger.
4. Comes with peep sights.

IMNSHO, a semiauto is a terrible choice.

Is he pulling the trigger with two fingers? ;)
