Cheep bullets

Cheep? Here I thought maybe you wanted some baby chicken bullets!:uhoh::scrutiny::neener:

Good luck finding cheap bullets anymore. What with lead prices jumping all over, it's difficult to find cheap bullets.

As far as brass goes, ranges, man. Between the indoor range where I swept up a little more than my own (hey, I'm just trying to get what I paid for) and the outdoor range where people are just slobs, I've got all the brass I need. I tumble and carefully inspect them. Be reluctant about Glocked 40 cal brass. I've used some that weren't buldged too badly, but most I've passed on. Not to mention the boxes of factory brass I'll open every now and then.

Yep. I bought 2000 .40 brass from the brassman to "Put Back" a few months ago when prices on copper scrap started going way up. (We sold a couple of loads of scrap wire at work for over $7000. We got to keep one small load for Engineering. Buys nice shop lunches.) :D

Anyway, I have about 1500 or so I have scrounged from the range and another 500 I traded for, plus the batch I am shooting.

I have not shot any "bought" .40 brass yet. :)

No cheep bullets anymore. The price of them roughly doubled over the last year.
Primers and powder also went up, but not as much.
Check with Midway and Graf's - I just got a couple of thousand of 45 Colt copper plated Berry heads at 9 cents each from Graf's.

plated bullets or lead are about as cheap as you can get...and those are more and more expensive every day.

The cheapest bullets you will get are the Copper plated ones. I buy mine from X-treme.

http://www.xtremebullets.com/

The brass I collect at the range and have also bought some at the Sportsman's Warehouse. .40 S&W is very popular so you will find it all over.

The border patrol is now collecting their brass as they have someone contracted to reload their ammo. I still collect as much as I can, tumble it and inspect it as was suggested by Fiero.

If you buy bullets on line or on the phone you will have to account for shipping. I've made several fruitless trips to the Sportsman and their shelves have been getting leaner and leaner concerning primers and bullets. Buying from Cabella or the Sportsmans off the shelf is cheaper because you don't have to pay shipping.

Just my $.02

For the cheapest way to go for bullets is to cast your own. You can get a melting pot on ebay and molds too. Not much investment. As for lead, you can usually get all you want from the tire shops in the form of wheel weights. They will usually give you all they have. I cast for several pistol calibers including 9mm, 38, 40s&w, 45acp, 454 Casull and 44 mag. Wheel weights are free and plentiful. Might look into it. It is definitely worth the investment.

Don't buy melting supplies off of ebay. Grafs is much cheaper, and they are pro-gun unlike E(vil)bay.

Powder Valley for Powder, Primers, Brass and Bullets. When you order powder and primers they don't charge you double Hasmat fee like Midway does. They ship bullets by USPS in the $8.95 Bulk Box up to 70 lbs. http://www.powdervalleyinc.com/

A side note for those who load the .38 Special. Powder Valley has 158 gr SWC/HP bullets, the FBI bullet. Look under "Cast Bullets" then "Hornady" and you will find them. They are only $15.97 for 300 bullets, part # HOR10428. For all those who have a .38 Special that isn't +P rated, here is your chance to make a quality standard pressure SD round that mimics the FBI load which is no longer manufactured in a standard pressure round. (except for the new Buffalo Bore ammo but that's over $1 a round)

powdervalleyinc.com has lead bullets cheapest I've seen.
Around $42 per 1000 for 40 s&w IIRC, $46 for 45acp.

OK, I'm going to interject some economics here.

I reload 45 acp and 223. I have a Glock 22 and have been thinking about adding some 40S&W dies to my set up and loading some for it to.

At a recent trip to Wally World, I noticed that you can still buy 40 S&W in Blazer Brass for $7.37 for a box of 50. 180 grains JFP. That's about .15 a round with sales tax.

A plated bullet costs a dime, figure .02 for a primer, another penny or so for powder. Never mind your investment in dies, etc. That's only a .02 a round difference without considering brass, your time, dies, the difference in a plated bullet vs jacketed etc. I bought 20 boxes on the spot. Will buy 20 more next week.

Some folks like to badmouth the BB, but it has always run very reliably in my gun. I figure by the time I go through these, I'll have a 2000 rounds of empty brass to reload (like I will be able to find it all!). The CCI brass reloads very well in 45 ACP, I'd expect the same for 40 S&W.

So go check out your local WM. Stock up on BB, hold your nose while you blast through this "inferior" ammo and start looking for some bullet bargains to reload that brass with.

Just my .02.

On masterblaster bullets. Those polymer bullets are just coated lead? Is that right. I can't see a polymer having enough density to be otherwise, but thought it pertinent to ask.

Looks about time to buy some casting equipment....drat.

You don't mention what part of the country you're in.

In Memphis, TN, hard cast bullets manufactured by a local company, TN Cartridge, are generally available in gunshops and ranges. www.tncartridge.com.

The .45acp 200gr lswc that I use most is listed on their website for $44/1000 but is still available in local shops for $19.99/500 (with additional discounts for membership). Great for practice but not as consistent for my guns at the 50yd line. However, considering that remaining Star's are selling for $89/1000 and "star clones" at Zero & Precision Delta listed $75/1000, the TN Cartridges make great practice & 25yd ammo. They carry .40sw hard cast and plated bullets. Good company and great owner.

Check with your local shooting range for their recommendations. Also, with flat rate box at the post office, shipping cost is fairly standard ($8.10 for up to 2000 bullets) around the country.

HQBrass at www.hqbrass.com had some great prices...for "once fired" .40 & .45.

For powders and primers, there is a Sportsman's Warehouse, in the southern part of the city...saves me the extra hazmat fees for mail ordering small amounts.
